Old Fashion Oatmeal vs. Insant Oatmeal

Ok so pros and cons? Obviously Instant has high sugar content but the calorie intake is nearly the same. I use both, when I use the old fashion I generally mix it with berries to liven it up a bit. But sometimes for the sake of convinence I grab an instant oatmeal usually a flavored one.

So what are the benefits/downsides to each? Should I completely steer clear of Insant? I haven't been able to find a huge difference so looking for more input

I prefer organic bulk steel cut oats. It's super cheap, and I can control how much sugar goes into it. Plus i'm skipping any additives. like to add a quarter cup milk, berries and a bit of honey.

There is no real difference, just how much it is steamed before it gets to you. I only use plain either way and add a small amount of brown sugar.

The instant is higher in sodium and lower in fiber, and it also has that gummy texture.

If you get into the flavored varieties, it's higher in sugar, sodium and sometimes fat, lower in fiber, and still has the gummy texture.

Making oatmeal with old-fashioned oats is super-quick in the microwave - just two minutes! I find that old fashioned oats keep me full longer than instant oatmeal.

We get bags of rolled oats for oatmeal. Why? It's cheaper. I can flavour it myself. If I want the brown sugar flavour, I put brown sugar in. I can add sweetener, fruit, etc. It takes me a minute to make in the microwave.
  • I don't even know why its called instant the red mill steel cuts I buy are made the same way add water and microwave for 1min >.> Natural is way better for you no unkown factors as far as actual nutrients and incredients put in.

RED MILL STEEL CUT OATS!!! :)

I prefer the old fashioned. It seems like a lot more and I stay full longer. I just started mixing in a tablespoon of peanut butter and cut up banana. Soooo good!

    Quick oats - creamiest
Rolled oats - not quite so creamy
    Steel cut oats - chewiest

I have a stash of instant plain oatmeal packets at the office in the event of a hunger emergency. I use regular quaker oats at home - so much tastier and satisfying. But the folks posting here have me thinking - keeping a container of regular oatmeal is a better idea. I'm stuck in the "it's for the office, it has to be in a convenience package" mindset.

    ^this!

we do the following in the crockpot over night:

    1 cup steel-cut oats
    4 cups water
    1 cup cream
    1 cup dried cranberries
½ cup dried fruit (figs, apricots, or whatever you like)

Combine above ingredients in a slow cooker.

Turn on to “Low”, and leave on overnight.

Taste in morning and add salt if needed.

you can substitute the cream for half and half, light cream or just milk if you want. but its super yummy and very easy.

I only use Old Fashioned oats, by Quaker. I have been using it for so many years now, that when I have a meal that someone else has made with the instant oats, it tastes so weird to me.

I prefer the texture of OFO. :)

I have never tried steel cut oats, but I'm game for them!!

This is pretty much me, too. I always fix mine with some almond milk and a teaspoon of cane sugar, maybe a dash of cinnamon.

I just can't stand the texture of instant oatmeal. It's barfy to me. When I make old fashioned oats though they are easy to make in the microwave. I'll do like the half cup of oats with enough water to just cover them, a little brown sugar and then mic it for 1:45. Nom nom.

I like the old fashioned better for baked goods, and the quick oats for stove-top. I don't like any kind of instant oatmeal.
