calories for hubby???

Hubby wants to join me with healthier eating (great) but l'm guessing that he should be eating more than me? He is 6 foot 2 and probably about 140 kg at the moment and does little exercise, can anyone give me an idea - thanks.

He should for sure, google bmr and tdee calculators. The bmr one is what he should never eat under. The tdee one is what he needs to eat to maintain. So from the tdee you subtract 500 would be 1 lb a week and those would be his cals for the day :)

thanks, l looked up an online calculator and it said his calorie requirements for the day were 3500 - and to eat 500 less for weight loss, but to me 3000 sounded way too many??????

Yep that sounds about right. It sounds high to you because as a woman your requirements are likely much lower.

Maybe get him to join MFP as well and work it out that way.
  • Men in general need to eat more than women - on average about 500 calories more (lucky *kitten*). Also, the bigger you are the more calories you burn just to live, without factoring in exercise. A 6 foot 2 male weighing 140kg is going to need to eat a lot to maintain this, so he will be able to lose weight eating what seems way too much to you.
Go by the TDEE calculation, which should be correct providing you select the right activity level. For perspective if you figure out his BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) it is in the region of 2600 calories. This is the energy his body needs to maintain itself even if he spent all day in bed!
As your husband loses weight he will burn less calories doing the same things, so in order to keep up the same rate of weight loss he'll need to adjust his calories lower or add in more exercise.

Good luck to both of you :)
