My Bill of Rights

I took a class over the summer and there was a "bill of rights" that was handed out in class. It hits many of my emotional issues. I hope this helps someone else as well!!

I have the right to:
• Feel good about myself no matter what I weigh.
• Be treated with dignity and respect
• Follow my own values and standards
• Make my own decisions
• Ask for what I want and have my needs and wants respected
• Make mistakes and not have to be perfect
• Feel what I feel – no matter what it is or what others say
• Experience and then let go of fear, guilt, and shame about my eating and my weight
• Say “No” to anything that I feel I am not ready for, don’t want to do, feel is unsafe for me or violates my values
• Take time for myself to fully participate in my weight-management program: Keep food and activity records,
plan meals so they just don’t “happen” to be high in saturated fats and sugars, ask for and give support,
and reward myself with time to relax
• Change and grow
• Be more forgiving of myself and others
• Choose NOT to discuss my personal life
• Try out new behaviors
• Break off conversations with people who put me down
• Change my mind at any time
• Be angry and express it
• Not take on other people’s problems
• Eat healthier foods and spend money to be healthier
• Rest and have personal time
• Plan menus and cook meals of my choice
• Choose restaurants that support my eating choices
• Make special requests from my waiter
• Indulge without guilt and without having to defend my choice
• Leave food on my plate
• Ask friends and family to help me by sharing tasks and by offering encouragement
