Erratic weight loss

I have been counting calories on this site for just over 3 months, trying to stick to 1200-1400 cal a day and have lost 18 lbs. I am very happy with my weight loss, but it has been a very erratic pattern. The first six weeks I lost 12 lbs, the next six weeks I lost only 2 lbs and most recently I have lost 4 lbs in one week! I was so frustrated about being stuck in a plateau for 6 weeks and now the weight is coming off quickly. Even during the first six weeks, I would lose maybe .5 or 1 lb in a week and then lose 3 the next.
Just curious if this has happened to anyone else or if anyone has thoughts about what is going on.

Weight loss is not linear so it is perfectly normal! Good job!0

That's almost exactly what's been happening to me. I've been wondering if my scale is broken, since despite my seemingly rapid weight loss as of late, I still wear the same size jeans! I guess I'll wait for 10 more pounds to drop, and see if my jeans still don't fall off of me...0

Glad to see I'm not alone in this. I weighed 275 on June 6 when I started with the My Fitness Pal calorie counting app and much harder workouts. As of Monday Sept 10 I was down to 238 lbs but have been climbing to 242 today Sept 14, which is odd as I'm right on my calorie count for the week, so I've been feeling frustrated. I've noticed my trends seem to be 5-10 lbs in two to three weeks, then plateau for a week or two, then drop more. It seems like weight loss should be consistent and continual if you eat and exercise consistent and continual, but it really seems to happen in unexpected fits. Oh well, as long as I reach my goal of 190-200 lbs I guess I shouldn't stress how it happens, but the plateaus and occasional increases make you feel like you're doing something wrong, or not properlly recording calories consumed and/or burned.0

For some people that's just how it goes. Weight loss is weird. Don't worry about it, just keep going. However, I would like to note that when I recently had a hump of not losing for over a month, I cleaned up my diet and now the weight is falling off again.0

Same here! I lost 10 pounds in the first six weeks. Hit a wicked plateau in August, now I'm back to losing. I calculate it will take me 11 or twelve weeks to lose the second 20 pounds. But that is fine - I'm moving in the right direction. I'm going to be tracking my food on MFP for a long time after I reach goal because I just don't trust myself to maintain my weight loss without it. So this is just my life for the foreseeable future. Not losing this weight is not an option - no matter how long it takes!!0

this, although if you start experiencing massive weight loss consistently you should see a doctor0 -
