My Sodium intake is low

Hi, I am on day 3 of calorie counting and I see that my sodium intake is only a fraction of my daily goal, is this likely to cause me a problem? I cook most things from basic ingredients rather than eat processed foods and only occasionally add salt.

Hi there! What is low? The general health guidelines shows 2300/2500 mg. of sodium as a high end goal, but honestly I think that is still way too high! I have kidney disease and I work to keep my sodium below 1500 mg. a day, and try to hit a goal of 500 mg of sodium for most days. The way I do that is by trying to stay away from processed foods, which it sound like you are doing. Over 77% of sodium intake comes from processed foods. The American Heart Association recommends a 1,500 milligrams guideline for all adults. 2300/2500 mg sodium is an upper limit for healthy adults with no other health issues. Personally, my feeling is that our bodies were made to ingest natural foods, so the increase sodium content from processed foods is too much for our biological systems, creating increased blood pressure and hardening of the arteries. Salt is used as a preservative after all, if we take in more than we need, it can cause damage to our bodies. We need sodium, but I think that healthy levels are far below the recommended high limit. It sounds like you already have good healthy habits. If you are concerned, see the doc for blood tests to make sure your blood chemistry is where it should be. Good luck!

  • Over the 3 days the levels are 615, 263, 880 and as far as I know I have no heart or kidney problems. Thanks for putting my mind at rest.
