I'm pregnant and not sure if im getting enough cals.

I'm 3 months pregnant and don't know if i'm getting enough calories. I took a survey based on my height and starting weight to see what calories it took to maintain my weight, which was 1600, and i attached the extra 300 calories one is supposed to get during pregnancy, which would make my cal intake 1900. but i keep hearing that in pregnancy, your cal intake is based on 2000 cal diet so i should be getting 2300. that seems like a lot. anyone have any info for me?

Congratulations! Tbh unless you are significantly overweight I would eat healthily and to appetite during pregnancy. As I remember the body's extra demands during pregnancy are actually really small something like 200 calories a day (though don't quote me, it's been a while!) have lots of fruit and veggies good fats and protein and carbs and you will be fine.0

I'm 18 weeks now myself.
My doctor had me at maintenance calories for the first trimester. Maintenance plus 1/2 lb per week gain for second, then +1 lb per week for third. The real focus should be on getting sufficient iron, calcium, and folic acid in your diet. Your prenatal vitamins will help tremendously, but don't worry if you lose in the first trimester. It's common to drop weight especially with morning sickness (really should be renamed, "I puke all day long...") for the first few months. That will ease up quite a bit in the second for most women.

first trimester you don't need to consume any extra calories, your matabolism slows down and baby gets all nutrients before you do. Second trimester you can add 200-300 calories, an apple and some yogurt, not heavy calores, cheese, somethignyou know.
also 3 months pregnant and I eat 2,000 a day and baby is fine!
If you are having twins you *kitten* 500 instead of 3000 -

My calorie intake for pregnancy is 1750. The 2000 number is generic.
ETA: 1750 is maintenance plus 300 (I'm in 2nd tri).0 -
I am a midwife in the UK and we just advise our women to eat healthily not diet but you don,t need extra calories either. Babies grow anyway they are like little parasites ( I mean this in the nicest possible way) they will take what they need at the detriment of the mother, that is why so many women are anaemic. The problem we encounter is women who think I am pregnant I need to eat more then eat crap and pile weight on. Obesity in pregnancy leads to many complications. I only gained 28lbs with my twins and they were 7lb4 and 7lb. I recently ran a group for overweight pregnant women they followed a diet plan and we gave them support throughout their pregnancy and 6 weeks after they hardly gained any weight and all the babies were good sizes some over 9lb, the week after they had all lost about a stone. All of these women ate very healthily and really looked after themselves, their self esteem was also increased as a result of the group. It was a very positive experience. All the women said they ate far more than they usually did but just healthy stuff. Eat sensibly and you will be fine.0

I am a homebirth midwife, now, while I am not a doctor, I deal specifically with pregnant ladies. The 2300 calorie rule, is pretty normal. Drink half your body weight in ounces of water, each day. Think HCG increasing your metabolism, the baby is getting many of your calories, each minute. Whether you are actively eating or not. We would rather see you eat your calories and have a healthy body and baby, than your health to suffer from too few. Also, don't limit your salt intake, too much. It helps with blood formation. I'm eating 1810 and struggling to get that most days. I'm not trying to diet, just to eat healthier. I eat when my body says to, and don't if I'm not hungry. For me, eating during pregnancy is intuitive. I try to limit the "crap" foods I take in, so me and baby are getting the best nutritional bang for our buck, so to speak. If I get a craving, I usually give to it, without going overboard. I'm not really trying to diet, so much as monitor what I eat.
I go take the Gestational Diabetes test on Monday, so my diet may well change when we get the results back from that. The thing I'm trying to concentrate most on is my water intake. I hate drinking water, but I know I need to. I am slightly anemic when pregnant, if I'm not taking prenatal vitamins. So I'm trying to switch to Iron rich foods as well.
I like what another poster said.....when you're pregnant, it's like having a little parasite inside of you. Because it's kind of true. They will get their nourishment, one way or another. But if you're in doubt, why don't you talk to your doctor about it?0
