Heylo :) Darn hips >.<

Hey all! I'm new to the site, just joined like...3 days ago, on the recommendation of a friend. I have a hard time motivating myself to go to the gym, although I did go today so yay! I am in dire need of motivation, and if anybody has ideas on exercises to get rid of weight that is kept in the stomach and hips, that would be amazing! My doctor told me I'm a 'gynoid.' >.<

30 day shred is already helping with my hips, which got huge after 2 back to back pregnancies. I still have a long way to go, but the changes I already have motivate me to keep going.

You may find it hard to believe but when your hips start getting smaller and belly bigger (around menopause) you will look back wistfully at memories of shapely hips. Who wants a body like a man? Not me.:flowerforyou:
  • Haha well, I don't either, but I'm about 70 pounds overweight and it's all in the hips and thighs. I would be happy to lose even 30 pounds...or drop a jean size or 2. Mostly, I don't want to turn out like my father.

Here's the deal. Scientific studies have shown that males are sexually attracted to women with curvy shapes. Hourglass shapes. It signifies the ability to bear children, nurse, etc. It sends a physiological response to the brain. Only 17% of men prefer women with no hips or bust. YET a very small proportion of women actually have true hourglass shapes! So consider yourself lucky! Most women have an apple or pear shape. To me you look very well proportioned.

Health is not about shape, it's about being in shape! You can't change your bone structure. If you've always had big hips and a smaller waist, you always will. Embrace it.

You can't target areas to lose fat. You have to reduce your overall bodyfat % to reduce anywhere, and everyone's body stores it differently. Cardio works best for losing BF%! And strength exercises make whats left over look *good* :) I have a feeling you will lose inches everywhere to start, but your stomach will lose the most first, then the hips. Women *usually* put on excess weight on the stomach last (unhealthy fat area), so it is the first to start going noticeably. BUT everyone is different, so you may not be the same.

Make sure you try to stick by the calorie goals. Most peoples issues are from pure caloric excess.

And being gynoid is good :) It means you are very "female"... birthing hips and boobies :) Both are desirable for women to have, lol.
  • My stomach is another problem issue :) I do like my general shape, I just want to lose the extra weight because I know it's not healthy. My father is diabetic and I am certainly on the fast track to joining him.

That's awesome that you made it to the gym today! Have you thought about taking Zumba classes? I've started taking them, and not only does Zumba burn a gazillion calories, but it also really hits some of those target areas! I find I do much better taking classes in general as opposed to working out solo, because I don't want to be that one person in the class who dips out early. Good luck—you're in the right place by being here :-)
  • I'm actually going to start taking a personal fitness class through my college that lasts from mid-October through mid-December. That way, I'm being held accountable by someone other than myself. I get college credit for going to classes such as Zumba (for free!) I don't do well working out solo either, I need someone to hold me accountable. My biggest issue really is excessive caloric intake. I eat way to much of the wrong foods.

I have a big belly too. In fact the whole reason I joined MFP is I got asked TWICE in one week if I was pregnant! BOO.

I started off by tracking cals, and walking. after two weeks of that, I started strength training. Muscle burns fat! Soon I am going to start doing sit ups to firm my core and stomach muscles. I have seen terrible things happen to my body and spine JUST from having weak core / stomach muscles.
  • I need to start doing sit ups and push ups, I think. The push ups to help with upper body strength (I have next to none, in my opinion) and the sit ups will help build muscle in my stomach and get rid of my belly :) I'm lucky that my stomach muscles are strong enough I can hold my stomach in when I'm walking so I don't look too bad, but I would feel much better if it was just GONE.

When a person exercises, especially with weights, fat comes off all over the body. I do not believe that spot training as they call it works. I have read some on it and I just don't see anyone with any clout saying it works.

I recommend just getting in a weight-training routine and if you like aerobics do those to. I don't do them anymore because I feel they are useless unless it's something I just love doing, more for fun than anything. Muscle burns fat more effectively than anything else so that is my focus. Muscle need good nutrition to build and tone so I focus on that as well.

Most people come here with the idea of eating less to lose fat. That is only half true. Yes, you need a deficit from your Daily Energy Expenditure, take in less calories then you are burning. But finding how many calories you need to consume to lose weight should be a priority. Find your Body Fat%, find your BMR after that (the amount you would be fed if in a coma) and then find your amount of calories to lose weight. Here is a great article to find all the above:

    http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/654536-in-place-of-a-road-map-2-0-revised-7-2-12

There are several other calculators besides the military that folks recommend and I thing they are all good.

If you find this overwhelming, join the team:laugh: and just use what MFP gives you and eat back enough of your daily calories burned to keep your food intake above 1200. I am 5'2" and 131 right now and I eat 1600 a day. I have not gained any weight but lately I have not lost because I am building muscle and the scales don't tell me what shape I'm in, the tape measure and my clothes are the best gauges:)

    Hope this helps, denise
