Sugars and carbs the worst enemy!

I need help friends! It is a bit embarrassing, but there might be others in the same situation.

I eat healthy food and excersie regullarly. However, 2 weeks before my period I am sooo hungry i can eat for England. I crave sugary stuff like carrot cackes, cup cakes, bluberry muffins and carbs like crisps, pretzels and popcorn or anything with sugar or carbs. But interestingly as soon as my period starts every craving dissapears and I can go back to normal healthy eating.

I am very worried that all the hard work i do it will be ruined by my period cravings as i can not control myself. I am always hungry going double of my calorie intakes daily. And carrot sticks don't help!

I take St John's Wort (sunsine pills) as it is good for my period moods and it helps, but my food cravings are getting out of control!

I know my hormones causing this, but how can i control or stop it?

I get like this as well, it is tough. The best advice I have is to not keep any of that bad food around you.

My mom recently visited and brought over chocolate, and this is the first time I've been bad while PMSing because I don't keep stuff like this in my house.
  • Yes I get the same too, but apparently it's because well...your uterus needs the nutrients to refresh itself...i feel weird for writing that lol.

Do you eat a lot of protein and fibre?
Do you drink water a lot?

It is okay to snack on carbohydrates, but make sure that you eat some protein at the same time. Eating carbs by themselves gives your body an immediate blood sugar fix, but the carbs are digested quickly and then you are hungry again an hour later. If you eat protein with the carbs, the you still get the quick fix, but the protein takes longer to digest and you end up feeling more satiated. This prevents the hunger pangs and cravings.
  • Thanks gals, i only eat the same amount of protein that MPF has set me so probably wouldn't hurt eating more of it. I did noticed that I eat and shortly after I am hungry again, so it might be the problem. I will try it!
  • Well, Tundeke, I can relate to sugar cravings, but not for that particular reason...

I use a psychological tactic on myself because I find it difficult to "restrict" or "take-away" things from my life. So, instead of saying, "don't eat chocolate ever." Instead, I will say, "Ok, let me eat this bunch of kale along with some brown rice, then I can eat whatever I want."

Chances are, once you eat the healthy food, your desire for sweets will very much diminish.

Additionally, cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, kale, and brussel sprouts have components that support healthy estrogen metabolism for both men and women. These phytonutrients pack a powerful punch for all sorts of human conditions and goals (especially weight loss!)

Honestly, I am finding that going without starchy carbs and sugars is much easier than trying to be "moderate" with them. If you don't eat them, you don't physically crave them. They create a vicious cycle.

Have a look at radiant recovery on the web - its for people who crave sugar and it may help you understand what is going on for you. Also Try taking some 5-HTP just before you are likely to crave - you can get it from health food shops and it may help you interfere with the craving you are feeling . good luck

davert123 - I never heard of 5-HTP before but i have looked in the health shops and bought a bottle. I take two a day; one in the morning one in the evening. Amazing! Sugar craving is almost gone, there is one odd crave but that seems normal how i used to be! So i just want to say thank you!!! :flowerforyou:
