School's new nutrition program

I'm sure many of you have heard about the modification of school lunches to include more fruits and veggies, and limit things like bread. Our local newspaper wrote an article about it, which was shed in a somewhat negative light. There was a lot of "things are just getting thrown away and not eaten" and "the students aren't coping well without french fries". (I love that one.)

But this is my favorite quote. Here's the proof that it's probably not the standard lunches that are the problem:

"Those that don’t have much of a taste for the school lunch program have brought their own lunches, go out for open campus lunch or buy items at the a la carte area where students can purchase malts, cookies, Pop-Tarts or other items."

Yes. Let's chase our kids off of the whole fruit/veggie thing and still offer them up malts, cookies and Pop-Tarts.

Sigh......

Are your schools similar?

My school doesn't sell anything anymore except the main entrees (whole wheat subs, salads, pizza, and whatever the meal of the day is). They stopped selling chips and cookies, and you're not allowed to leave the lunchroom to get junk out of the vending machine. You can't leave campus to get food elsewhere, either.

Of course, pretty much all the kids hate it and complain about the lunches daily..
