Does exercise curb appetite or just make you hungrier?

If this were purely physiological it should increase your hunger. You burned calories, and your body wants to maintain or increase fat stores. However, the reality is that much of this is psychological, and having put in a good workout makes you want to stay on track. Both are normal.0

Cardio kills my appetite. I almost always go under on cardio days. Strength training on the other hand - no matter what I've had to eat prior, halfway through my workout, I am starving.0

Totally agree!.Cardio gives me a mental high and i dont feel like eating at all.But strength training make me hungry as hell.0 -
Since I usually feel like puking after I get done strength training - definitely not hungry. :laugh:0

Any exercise kills my appetite then again stress kills my appetite as well. I work out hard and my mentality after a work out is "All I want is water" because I'm so thirsty after despite drinking water throughout. I know that plays a part as I'm drinking 3 cups at a time so I'm always full of water.0

I think the residual effect is increased hunger but during/immediately after it's suppressed.0

It depends. Running about 4-7 miles usually curbs my appetite a lot, to the extent where I'm ravenous the next day because my body is like OH YEAH, CALORIES. Anything over eight or nine though, and I have to eat ALL THE THINGS.0

Even if I go to the gym hungry, I lose my appetite immediately after a good cardio session (1 hr). What I don't understand is that I often go to the gym after work with a terrible starchy carbohydrate craving. But after cardio I first lose the hunger, and then find it has turned into a meaty protein craving.
This is what happens to me also, and happened today.
Actually, I was craving for nuts after my workout today (90 mins elliptical).
If I do 60 minutes or less exercise, I find I get hungry. If I exceed that, I find my appetite is definitely suppressed.0 -
Here you go....Energy expenditure
The appetite of an athlete is not a reliable indicator of either energy balance or specific macronutrient requirements, because no biologic imperative to match intake to expenditure appears to exist.[8] Hunger is actually suppressed for a brief period after a single episode of exercise at greater than 60% maximal oxygen consumption, or VO2max.[9]
Food deprivation increases hunger, but the same low energy availability, when caused by energy expenditure from exercise, does not increase appetite.[10] In one study, a 20% increase in energy expenditure during 40 weeks of marathon training did not result in an increase in energy intake.[11, 12]0 -
Cardio not that hungry. Weights make me very hungry.0

For me, I would have to say hungrier for sure!0

It makes me lose my appetite. But a few hours later is a different story...
Yep, I lose my appetite but i usually work out late in the evening and the next day I am usually very hungry!0 -
I do not want to eat after a workout.. but later it catches up with me and I am starving.. So I try to eat something post workout.0

I'm exactly like this.. cardio decreases my appetite but if I do weights (les mills body pump) I'm realllllly hungry!0 -

The opposite for me.0 -
Exercise increase the release of Peptide YY (an amino acid) which can suppress appetite.0

for me it suppresses. When I'm hot and sweaty I feel a little nauseous and all I crave is a hot shower! LOL0

It surpresses my appetite until after I take that first bite of food. Then I could literally eat a horse!!!!0

ME too ^^^
Me three
I think it also depends on if I at bad during the day, the more balance meals I eat the less hungry I am. So I find now that I am eating healthier I am eating less and am not hungry very often. Any type of protien bar I eat seems to make me hungry in 2 hours so I avoid eating those unless I know I will be eating again soon0 -
Training makes me hungrier, only eating a high protein and fat meal curbs my appetite. I can usually eat a lot of carbs before getting full.0

Excercise literally works as a natural appetite suppressant for me. After a long ride on my bike I have to remind myself to eat after0
