Injured and so discouraged

I was just starting to feel more fit, feeling like my old self a little bit and then I got hurt. I went to run across the street and my calf muscle clenched up. I could barely stand on it yesterday and it is a bit better today but there is no way i will be able to work out for a while.

I feel so discouraged. I would love some advice on how I can burn some calories with an injured leg.

I've had to take it easy the last 6 weeks and it was very frustrating at times. I would say focus on strength training and find exercises that are low impact. If you go to Sparkspeople's Youtube page they have several workouts including one you can do sitting down. Even though my workouts have been severely constrained the last 6 weeks, I've still lost weight by being diligent with my eating. In fact, what you eat is more important than exercise when it comes to losing weight. But exercise is invaluable for other reasons and I can tell on the days that I wasn't able to workout, it really affected my mood and energy levels negatively.

I have some ongoing injuries that were frustrating me recently and I was so discouraged I just wanted to give up. I got some good advice from a few people on here and also heard their stories and suddenly things didn't seem so bad. Just thought I'd share the post with you in case your interested:

I'm on day 9 recovering from somehow injuring my shoulder at the gym. Don't really know how I did it as I didn't do anything I haven't already been doing. What I've been doing is really working my legs and abs. The Dr. told my daughter the athlete in the family to give her injuries 10-14 days off. I'm going to give my 14 since I'm old...er.

So, I'd say exercise the arms and abs and give your calf some rest, TLC with ice and motrin, and if still bothering you see the Dr.

About 10 years ago I broke my ankle and stopped training and stacked on the weight.

When starting at the gym this time round (3 years ago) I did an assessment at the gym and raised injury as a reason I might not be able to train. My PT pointed out to me that there are athletes with only one leg, and they train, so that is no excuse. Very few injuries exclude you from all activity. I found that great inspiration and have managed to train through/around several injuries since.

My biggest advice is don't take things too fast! I injured by knee about a month ago, and I have not been patient. I've been running on it when I know I shouldn't, and I totally killed it yesterday rock climbing. Now it's going to take me much longer to recover when I could have just chilled for a couple weeks.

    Some other tips:
    -advil around the clock
    -ice it
-upper body strength training (boring, but exercise vids can make it fun)
    -swimming :)
