Do I have a stress fracture? Any experience?

I recently changed my routine to include more running over longer distances. Last weekend I did 10 miles on Sat and 11.5 on Sun (should have taken a day off). Everything felt okay after, but I woke during the night and got up to use the bathroom. As soon as my left foot touched the floor I felt an excruciating pain in my left ankle on the inside (Medial Malleolus). I have been in pain and hobbling all day. I never like rushing off to the doctors, and was thinking of giving it three days as I know I pushed too hard last weekend. I have been running intervals and walking/jogging some distance since summer 2011. I'm a 50 year old guy, 174lbs.

Anybody out there with similar experience..?

Regards, David

It would seem to me that if it was a stress fracture the pain would have been bad while running. My guess is that it is tendonitis which is aggravated while sleeping because the tendons tighten up and then you may have overstretched it when standing up out of bed.

If the pain lessens during the day after everything warms up by walking around for a while then that points to tendonitis.

If the pain stays high all day and if it is still bad after a couple of days it may be a stress fracture.

Sharp pain = bad pain usually. If it lightens over the day as you move more, its probably muscles/tendons. If it gets worse as you put weight on it and move more, it could be bone. Ice ice ice, take it easy for a few days, and if it doesnt get better, get to the doctor. If its a stress fracture, they could get worse with time and more pressure.

I got tendonitis in my right foot training for the Boston Marathon in 2010. It was so bad that I had to skip the race. Looking back, it's because I was running too many miles with too much weight.

My only saving grace was that my buddy invited me out to San Diego --- so I got to try surfing and visit Las Vegas for the first time.
