Hey all,

So, I just read something about skim milk and I wanted to see if any of you have heard about this....

I read this: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/11/top-tips-from-health-experts_n_1865877.html?utm_hp_ref=marlo-thomas&icid=maing-grid7|main5|dl18|sec3_lnk1&pLid=206744.

There is a slide in there (keeping in mind it's from the Dr. Oz show) that skim milk is the most fattening milk because even though it's low on calories, it's basically sugar when it gets to the non-fat level.

I switched to skim when I started MFP - I was drinking 1% before that... now I'm tempted to switch back. My hubs won't go below 2% - so I buy two 1/2 gallons...

What do you guys think about this?

Haven't heard this before. Interesting...But, I personally think Dr. Oz is a quack. However, this SORT of makes sense as some milk manufacturers put sugar sweeteners in skim milk to make up for the flavor profile that the fat gives to low or full fat milk. I drink 1% but I'm curious now to see what the sugar levels are when I go to the store next time JUST to see...

I second the calling of BS. I also agree that Dr. Oz is a quack.

If they added sugar, the diary would have to state it on the carton by law, at least in Canada. I don't expect the USA to be any different. As well, the carb count would go up a lot.
  • serving size is 1 cup- 11 grams of sugar in skim milk and I was looking at the Poinsettia brand

I don't pay any attention to Dr. Oz. However, just to make y'all mad (cuz, I like to), I drink whole milk, always have, always will. I have no problems with it. I'm building muscle mass without a problem, my belly is shrinking, and it fills me up.

I'm sure its possible if you just drink milk straight. It would be less filling with less fat and you might want to drink more of it.

I'm just guessing too as I don't drink skim milk anyway,I think its too watery. I usually drink raw whole milk

Drink whatever milk you prefer. I think skim milk is repulsive, but I have nothing against other people drinking it. It's fine. Stories like this are just designed to get attention to sell advertising. Don't play in to it.

    Cue:
"Humans are the only animals that drink milk of another animal"
    "saturated fat gives you diabetes"
"Cow's milk has too much sugar"
"Humans don't have the enzymes to digest lactose"
    "Drink Raw milk"
    "Drink whole milk"
    "Drink whole raw milk"
    "Milk is full of pus"
    "Dairy farming is abusive"
"Soy is evil, drink anything but soy milk!"
"Milk makes you fat, it's designed to make a calf grow rapidly in to a cow"

Just thought I'd head off all the stupid arguments bound to show up here....

Skim milk has 12 gram of sugars, all milk sugars
1% milk has 13 grams of sugar, all milk sugars
2% milk has 12 grams of sugar, all milk sugars
whole milk has 12 grams of sugar, all milk sugars

the milk sugar is lactose. Reducing the amount of fat in the milk does not change the amount of sugars in the milk since those sugars all all lactose. and a normal part of the milk itself.

the milk that has sugars added is chocolate milk, vanilla or chocolate soy, almond, rice milks.

Well there's the clue that it should be dismissed/ignored.

Dr Oz should be struck off. "The most fattening food in America" my *kitten*. Where was the soda? Where was the sweet tea? Where were his citations to peer reviewed scientific papers?

sandhillsmom had it right. All milk has about the same sugar. Go check the food database.

Erm, the sugar content in skim milk is similar to that of whole milk, at least the stuff at my grocery store is 1g difference.
  • I don't drink any dairy. I recently discovered I'm lactose intolerant, so I swapped to almond milk and coconut milk. These have WAY less calories, especially if you buy the unsweetened.

This. Plus sugar does not make you fat. Eating at a calorific surplus makes you fat. In fact skin milk is less likely to make you fat because it has less calories.

Sorry, but that part of the article gets a big ole fail.

Skim milk is just another product of our dietary fat-phobic mindset.

The same wonderful world that gives us 'fat free' yoghurt and piles in the sugar.

I don't drink milk but I do have heavy cream in my coffee ... and very nice it is too.

I don't know how old you are but have you ever considered what an excessive sugar load will do to your metabolism in the long term?

I'm 41, I can see that my poor dietary choices got me to where I was, and it wasn't just about calories in/out.

Are you trying to say that drinking milk has an "excessive sugar load" sufficient to damage one's metabolism in the long run?

You are funny. I am 45 and as you can see, am perfectly fine. I have also drank a lot of milk all my life. My metabolism is great and per my recent DEXA scan I have off the charts good bone density. Any other questions?

This happens to me too! Anything with cow fat in it does, actually.

I like skim milk. It tastes good. It has a lot of nutrients I otherwise wouldn't get.

Saying that skim milk is fattening because a cup has ~13g of sugar in it is like saying any fruit is fattening because of all of the sugar in it...

And dear lord, sugar is NOT evil. Some people (like myself) require enough to avoid getting to hypoglycemic. Diabetics need it to avoid, you know, DEATH sometimes.

BUT, there is a point to be made. Typically speaking, fats + proteins help most people feel full with less. Think about the difference between eating ice cream and eating an egg.

Well I don't know about you but the reason I got fat had everything to do with the fact I could not stop shoveling food into my pie whole. Either that or I have defied the laws of physics cause somehow or another I have lost 311 lbs. without track one single gram of sugar or sodium for that matter. OP... I to call bs on this, even though I prefer 1 or 2%, skim milk is still low in calories and has plenty of protein. It all good uless you just don't drink dairy.... Best of Luck....
