when you use a marinade on you chicken (or whatever you are cooking) do you include that in your food diary even if you do so before you grill?

I was wondering that same thing! I have a great homemade marinade I love to use for grilled chicken. If I counted all the calories for the actual marinade it would be ridiculous! Obviously you don't actually consume all of that. So I've been wondering how much to count. Hope someone has a suggestion...

I did when i started out, but don't anymore. But i'm a bit lazy with my tracking now that i'm closer to my goal weight.

I don't think it adds a lot of calories, but if you're watching your sodium, you might want to put it in there.

I usually don't count the marinade, just the meat.

ooops I double posted. :flowerforyou: I just figure this isn't an exact science, so sometimes estimation is okay. Not counting the marinade is part of that.
  • I always add everything becuase I am watching my sodium.

I'm thinking a good thing to do is to measure the marinade before and after. The difference is how much actually got used. Calculate the nutrition info for all of it, but only enter the difference you calculated.

I usually log like a tablespoon or two of the marinade...it all adds up!
  • I for instance marinated chicken in a yogurt mix with spices. By the way it came from the Biggest Loser Cookbook. It was absolutely awesome. Anyhow I adjusted it because it called for 4 tablespoons plain yogurt for each breast. I don't marinate that way. It all goes into a baggie. By the time I pulled it out of the bag, there really wasn't much yogurt on it. The purpose of the yogurt was to hold and work with the spices for marinating. Once cooked there was little taste of the yogurt so I did not even bother recording it.

Now if I used oil to carry the flavors of the marinade, I would probably add about 50 calories to the dish. In the end it does add up but generally I feel it is a non factor. You know your food better than me,. If you feel it is added to the meal then count it.
