My soup has gone wrong... :(

So, I had a bone left from a small ham hock, and I thought I'd make pea and ham soup. The bone is boiling up with some split peas as I write - and the whole kitchen smells like dog-food. I can't imagine it's going to get any better as it cooks, so I'm wondering if I should just bin it now...

Was I meant to use pieces of ham instead of the bone?

Have you made pea soup before ? It does have quite a strong smell to it .

I use the bone to make mine. I also add some extra ham pieces along with some ham base to give it extra ham flavor.
  • I've never made it, only enjoyed other people's labour...

I've never tried before but doing a quick search on google, I've found both things-putting the bone in as well as taking the ham off the bone. As for the smell...who knows :ohwell: I've always thought when I've thought about it or talked about it, you'd put the whole bone in
  • Oh yes, I did put an onion in. Other than that just the split peas (green) and the bone (remnants of meat removed to add in at the end).

I guess I should have made a broth from the bone first, then cooked the peas in it, but I was short of time so I thought I'd do it all at once and pull the bone out at the end...

It might still work out! Sometimes things smell or even taste weirder while they're cooking than they do at the end. Finish the recipe and see how it is.
  • Thanks all! I'll persevere in the hope of a miracle.

It's been on 40mins now so I've taken the bone out and will leave the split peas cooking on their own till soft. Then I'll whizz it up and see how it tastes...

are you sure it was fresh?

No real need to whizz it up (if by that you mean blend it). If you cook it reeeaalllyy long (like, 2.5 hours or so), the peas will disintegrate into that velvety texture naturally.
  • Hope it was fresh enough! It's two weeks since I bought it (which sounds a lot now that I think about it but ham on the bone always seems to last forever). I did nibble one of the bits I saved to add in later and it was fine.

    Delighted I don't need the blender - it's a b*gger to wash up :drinker:

Cooking peas do have a weird odor. Bon appetit!
  • Soup update...

It is finished, and it is DELICIOUS! Smells delicious too, just as it should. :drinker:

Thank you so much for encouraging me to persevere - if I'd binned it half way through I wouldn't be sitting down to such a delicious supper now.

Man, that smell was rank though. Not sure if it was the bone or the split peas, but seriously. RANK.
