Strength Training Help

Hey everyone. I have a question, but let me tell you my situation first. My job currently has me out of town quite a bit. Pretty much from 5:30AM Monday to 7PM Friday. Each night during the week in a hotel. My cardio is no problem as they usually have a stationary bike, tread and elliptical. Carido routine is usually an hour of any of the three or splitting the hour between the three, 4 days a week with resting Fri, Sat, and Sun.

Now, I want to start strength training at the gym when I am home. I was thinking since I don't get home till later on Fri, keeping this as a rest day and then hitting the weights Sat and Sun. However, is it wise to cram a full body weight lifting routine in two days with that long of a rest inbetween? Or should I just go by the answer of "It's better than nothing."?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

does your hotel have any weights at all? Dumbells? there are alot of great dumbell workouts for strength training....if not, you could do a 2 day strength training workout - do upper body one day, lower body next day...there are also alot of excercise you can do using just your own body weight that will be strength training....pushups, lunges, squats, core excercises.....or you could pick up a set of dumbells and take them with you???

If you want to do a full body weight training in 2 days, what I would suggest is splitting the days:

    Day one: Biceps, Triceps, Abs
    Day two: Legs, Chest, Back

Main thing is try to separate the similar exercises and don't try to do too much which will overwork your muscles. For example if you do Chest and Arms the same day you'll end up tiring your arms and it won't be as effective.

Depends on where I'm sent that week. Some have the dumbells and some do not. I never know till I arrive, unless it's a place I've been before. Using you're own body weight idea is doable but I never feel like I get the workout I do when hitting the gym. (I used to strength train years ago)

Do any of the hotels have fitness centers?

If not, you should look into getting some resistance bands. They're not perfect, but they are easily portable so you can use them in your hotel room while traveling

If you have your own car, you could include a bag where you put some adjustable dumbbells that you can take out in the night and do some weight training in the hotel. I don't have the possibility to access a gym and the only chance I have to do some training is after 10pm in the nights (not ideal but that is what I do).

Another possibility is getting the book "you are your own gym" (I don't have it but I heard wonders about it) you don't need any equipment but still gives you a full workout to do in the nights as well.

There is people that can not do workouts in the nights and still squeeze them at lunch time. So organisation is pretty much the key? How much do you REALLY want to squeeze the work out? if it is pretty badly, most of the times you manage to squeeze it somehow. The situation is not ideal but that is got you got. Otherwise....yes, two days is better than nothing.
  • You can try the "You are your own gym" workouts when you're traveling and unable to hit the weights. These are pretty intense body weight workouts.

It's better than nothing. If I were doing 2 days in a row and nothing else I'd probably do

    Day 1
    Squat
    Bench
    Barbell Row

    Day 2
    Deadlift
    Overhead press
    Pullup\lat pull down machine

or swap barbell row and overhead press

You could invest in some resistance bands and a pull up that hangs over the door.

During the week (m-F), I can't get to the gym in time to do weights and cardio. I'm up until 11 pm as it is and up at 5 am. I do all my weight training Saturday and Sunday. I do upper body one day and lower body the next. I liked the suggestion of push ups, lunges, situps, and squats during the week. I think I'm going to try that.

Thanks for all the input guys. I think I am going to go ahead and try splitting between the two days. If it doesn't work, I can alwasy try the "You are your own gym" and see how it goes. Thanks again!

Ok, so a quick update. After starting this thread I went ahead and bought the book "You are your own gym" and got the app on my phone last week. And wow. I know it is only been a few workouts but this is a great sub for not being able to hit a weight room. Will update again in a few weeks. :) Thanks again everyone.
