I herinated a disc so bad that it broke into pieces in my lower back 3 years ago and it left me with a damaged sciatic nerve to my foot and leg. I limp and cannot walk any and have a weight limit. Can anyone give me any hints what I can do for exercise? I recently have lost 28 pounds and want to do something beside sit on the couch.

I think a discussion with a physical therapist would be your best option. Great job on weight loss which should help in long run!

I dont mean to be cruel here, but you are asking something that relates to a medical situation. You should be directing this to the surgeons who performed the surgery... only they can advise you what is appropriate. It might even involve you holding discussions with a Physical Therapist.

Dont risk injury by bringing a medical question to a weight-loss/fitness website... no one here has access to your surgical records, radiologicals or current medical history... Seriously...

    Totally agree.
Yes, there are exercises, but you need a trained professional to coach you. I have had lumbar disc prolapse 3 times over the last 25 years, and I can live a normal life now so don't give up hope, just go see a professional! x

Hi I have been dealing with some herniated discs and will be having surgery this December! My Sciatica is a problem and my right leg has been numb for over 2 years. Tried everything non surgical first and now finally just accepting the fact it might be the only way before permanent damage. Feel free to add me as a friend. I know they have said swimming maybe yoga, cycling, walking anything with no impact on the back. Absolutely no jumping, running or high impact sports. I do however agree with the others. You should really look into what you can do for your back and be careful however I know I am not as careful as I should be.

We have a very large Spinal Surgical division where I work - I do the medical billing for them and 300 other physicians. I see the claims coming over, the notes for the surgeries all on the people who have reinjured theirselves from doing careless activities that they were advised NOT to do.... its very hard to get them to pay out but it does get paid.

Thats why - anyone with medical conditions need to stop referring to MFP - they really truly need to go back to the treating specialists overseeing their care.

There are cases that have made me cry because they risked things they were advised NEVER to do in the first place... I just dont understand where the common sense left them sometimes....
  • I haven't had surgery yet either. Doing all the things first to prevent it.But the damage is already done to the leg and foot and the back is healing.. Had 3 rounds of phyiscal therapy and live 40 miles from the nearest pool so going there everyday is not an option.Good luck on your surgery!

Thanks I don't have a good way to get to a pool during the winter months either I get quite bored trying to figure out what to do but I know walking is the best thing they said I could do.
