Since we don't have any laws demanding labeling for GMO products, does anyone have any tips for grocery shopping?
thanks!

I found a link that may ( or may not) be of use. Check it out and see if you find it helpful. It is scary how some countries do not have specific laws regarding the labeling!

I just read an article about that with regard to breakfast food.

  • Two great resources:

    The non-GMO shopping guide: www.nongmoshoppingguide.com.

And a website to search for non-gmo verified products: www.nongmoproject.org. You can search here for brands or types of foods, and read about their verification and labeling process. Note that they show you what has already been verified non-GMO and other products that are going through verification.

Also, just realized you are from Canada, but hopefully these links will still be of some use. It looks like the non-GMO project has expanded to Canada so you still might be able to find some products and brands to search for.
  • On produce stickers:
4 digits means it was conventionally grown
5 digits starting with 8 means it was genetically modified
5 digits starting with 9 means it was grown organically

Those categories can all overlap. It's really hard to get food that hasn't been genetically modified in some way these days.

I personally aim for organic stuff when I can. The websites provided are also great guides but when you're in a pinch and unable to access the web, organic is generally a safe bet.
