I'm 5'3, 153lb. and I wear between a size 5-9 (dependent on brand) jeans. I can still wear all my homecoming and prom dresses from high school, with the exception that my girls are spilling out the sides but no horrificly, just a little. I was 127 then. This is like 6-7 years later. I'm a college senior, student teacher, african american as well. According to the BMI scale, I'm overweight but I look the same as I did in high school except my thighs may be a bit bigger and I went up to a 36C.

I heard the BMI scale isn't accurate and I'd like to know if I'm overweight or not or if I should even be worrying about losing weight. I like my thighs and chest, though I would like to ton up my arms, thighs, and have a flatter stomach. I look more bloated than fat. I'll post some pics when I find my camera but based on this, should I be worried?

I'm 5ft 3 and 179 lb , I would love to be your weight but it's more a case of what you want and what would make you happy honey. Tone up if that will make you happy but don't pay too much attention to bmi , it says I'm very obese but I don't see a big fat wobbler when I look in the mirror?

To be honest no one can give you a real assessment without pictures.
  • Yes.

You can use this calculator to compare yourself to the rest of the people in the United States at your age and the rest of the people in the world at your age. Really puts things into perspective. I would also go off of how YOU feel, not what anyone else says about you.

I am 5' 3 1/2". When I was in high school I was 130, and in college I went up to 155. After college I dieted to get down to 122, and I was happy at that weight. Of course, after having kids, things went way out of control. It seems that you have gained 26 lbs in 6 years. That's not a huge gain, but if it continues, you will have a problem. Without knowing your body type, etc., I would say you may be *slightly* overweight, so you probably want to keep an eye on things (you can already see that the clothes you wore in HS are not fitting the same way) and possibly try to lose a little now before it becomes more of a problem.
  • Actually, my clothes from high school fit fine with the exception of my boobs, which I can't control. I was a size A in high school and grew to a C by the end of my freshman year. I didn't notice a weight gain until like...the beginning of my junior year but then again, I hadn't weighed myself for a few years until the beginning of my junior year.

BMI can be total crap - it totally depends on the person's fitness level and gender. But for the normal female I don't think it's too far off. OP, from what you described, I wouldn't say you're fat, maybe more that you're a bit out of shape. A litle tweaking of your diet (watch calories, get protein) and an increase in activity, especially adding in some strength training, would probably help you out a lot.

There is a difference between being fat and out of shape. I am ok with the weight I am now, I just would like it shaped a little differently thats all. So that is what you need to look at yourself.

Yeah, I heard BMI was total bologna and in order to get an accurate one, you need to see a dietician. Using the actual calculator isn't useful. I think I'm out of shape too, but I've been told I was fat but the thing is that I don't want to be boney. I like having thicker thighs and a bigger chest (though I doubt the chest thing has to do with weight gain). I more so just want to ton my stomach and thighs and arms.
