Knee clicking

Options
I was in a bike wreck recently and my knee came out clicking. There is some pain but not a lot. It clicks or snaps almost every time I bend it past 90 degrees and feels like stuff is catching in there. The pain is on the inside front of my knee to the right of my left kneecap. Does anyone have experience with this? Should I wait it our or go to the doctor right away?

Can you bear weight on it?

If not, I'd think that might warrant an urgent care visit to rule out anything super serious.

But I'm not a medical provider... just a random person on the internet.

    Good luck!

With my experience with my knee's i would go to the doctor to rule out any damage. I get that clicking to and pain in the same spot but mine is from arthritis but i have had 2 miniscus tears and 2 surgery's in the last 3 years

My knee makes all types of noises and aches and pains but that's because I tore a legiment in my knee last year and it never fully recovered. I think you should just to be sure go check it out and see what's going on. Better safe then sorry. Good luck :)

[I am NOT a doctor, but i did stay at a Holiday Inn, once  ]
I would schedule an appointment to your doc. Having had a knee "lock" on me a few months ago and the same feeling that stuff is catching there, it might be a torn meniscus. I have one in each knee.

Here is a little light reading:

Same thing happens with me, I have no idea what it is. It doesn't really bother me much.

As someone that just had a knee replacement done I have obviously learnt a few things about knees, doctors and physiotherapists over the past year....

Personally I would go and see a good sports physiotherapist rather than a doctor (GP) - PT's specialise in this type of stuff, and if they think you need to see a GP (or an Orthopedic Surgeon) they will refer you.

Dont wait to long to get someone to look at it - if it does not go away within a week / 10 days I would definitely go and see a PT before you do more damage (speaking from painful experience!!)

Knees don't heal themselves very well. I've done about everything I can to mine without having to have surgery. Clicks are pops are part of my every day. If during the wreck you landed hard on that knee, you could have chipped some cartilage in the patellar track due driving the kneecap into with the impact. If not that, sudden jarring / twisting can damage some of the ligaments or the meniscus cartilage inside the joint. I highly recommend going to a sports medicine or orthopedic doctor for an evaluation. Good chance it's nothing serious, but you want a doctor familiar with joints and sports injuries to make that call.

Yeah, I was going to say Meniscus tear, too. I had that same thing. I walked just fine on mine for 25 years before it became painful. Then had surgery, ten days recovery and it's been fine for the last 15 years.

Go to the doc. Sounds like a torn meniscus. They might be able to repair it.
An x-ray cannot show soft tissue damage so they might order an MRI to make the diagnosis. I hope you have good insurance.
If it is a meniscus tear it could get folded over and caught in the knee making it locked so you can't straighten out your leg. Thats what happened to me. I had surgery to remove it.

    Best wishes.

My knees click and grind too - one started doing it during my first pregnancy (8 years ago) and my other just started last year. It is one of my many health problems that I relate to my weight issue. My doctor said it is part of aging. I wasn't happy with that answer since I am only 32. I can't ride a bike pulling my boys anymore because of the pain from it. I started going to physical therapy which is helping a bit, and I have only been doing it for a couple of months. My therapist believes that shoes are part of my problem along with some muscle weakness in my upper legs, and possibly an old injury. I did have to press my doctor for an official diagnosis, an x-ray and an order to go to PT. I was dx with Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome, which goes by a couple of different names from what I understand.

it sounds like a tracking problem..
if your knee was overextended during the accident its possible that you suffered a subluxation of the patella. this is when it moves out of the patello-femoral grove (the grove your kneecap slides up and down in) and its basically an almost dislocation

this can stretch your VMO muscle and takes some time to recover from.

best to see a physiotherapist who can look at your joint to determine if its a tracking problem or something else.

light exercise and rest is good.

heat is good, cold is bad (all joint injuries, ice for 48 hours, then heat until recovered)

Time to check in with your orthopod - could be a torn meniscus or a patella tendon tear/strain.
