Church Dinners and Diets...

They DO NOT mix. Especially when you live in the south, where the average person fries everything in butter and salt. Has anyone ever noticed that before? Today is the beginning of our gospel meeting at church, and we have a meal after both services today. Everything is homemade -- which is good. But, everything, I'm sure, is loaded with sodium, fat, carbs... all of the stuff I'm supposed to stay away from.

I have to admit, though... I enjoyed every last tasty crumb of what I had today. It just sent me EXTREMELY over on my calorie level. 1691 calories (JUST FOR LUNCH). I think I'll try to locate the fruits tonight... if anyone remembers to bring them. Tomorrow is a new day.

From now on, though... whenever we have a church dinner, I think I'm going to make my own full meal (just for me) and then stick it away in the fridge until everyone else eats. That way, I get the fellowship without all of the extra calories.

That's a really good idea! We have potlucks at our church too. I try to prepare a couple of dishes that I know are healthy to share. I eat those and then add some salad or fruit. Sometimes though I just call it my day "off" and enjoy it! It is very hard to know how to log those yummy meals. We only have them at our church a few time a year.

Our church loves meals. We have 2 gospel meetings a year. At the beginning of each of them, we have 2 meals (one after each service on the first day). Then... we have meals scattered throughout the rest of the year too; for such things as graduation time, going-away parties, welcome parties, baby showers, wedding showers, etc... etc... etc... Heck, sometimes we even have meals "just because".

Our church family sure does love food. LOL.

I always make sure that *my* contribution is fruit salad or something... I usually take a macaroni dish (for my son who is very picky) and a salad of some sort... or two different salads... and one of my signature cakes...

and then I stick to stuff that is fresh or plain...

I moved to the south and I personally can't stand to eat much of what is brought to potlucks... I just don't find it appetizing... gravy and butter and vegetables cooked to mush (honestly... why???) so even before starting to eat more healthy I avoided that stuff

We had a potluck last weekend and I didn't want to deal with all of the super fatty, super unhealthy foods so I just brought myself food that I would be happy with. Other times I've done what the PP suggested and just bring something I would be happy having and then eating that mostly and sharing with others.

Today we had a youth pasta fundraiser. I have no doubt that it was high in calorie, but I tried to eat a smaller amount so that I could still contribute to the fundraiser since it will benefit my youth as well. I have yet to log my lunch and find out how much it cost me and if I have to make adjustments to the rest of my day.
