Is it worth it?

I am contemplating dropping my membership at Planet Fitness and signing up at Gold's Gym. I want to be able to take advantage of the different classes they offer, and the personal trainers they have available. Anyone who has a membership there, is the higer monthly membership fee worth it?

Replies

  • Sorry I'm not but wondered if they did a complimentary pass so you can try it out - explain you're thinking of changing to their services and I'm sure they'll give you a few free visits to try and entice you? Or, they might let you just sign up for one month to see what it's like?
  • They will certainly let you try it out! I would say that unless the bulk of your workouts are classes and it's only a small increase in cost then it's probably not worth it.

I did the same actually, but mine was because Planet Fitness's dumbbells only go up to 75.

Classes seem like they could be fun, so that is a legitimate plus for you.

The personal trainers, no just no, lol.

I spent 229 for 15 months at golds, so the increase expense wasn't very much.

For me, because of the dumbbells and more equipment, it was worth it.

Let's be real. Except for maybe DB rows, you probably aren't going over 75 pounds anyway......

    amirite?

    Lol,

Um I DB chest press 95s and I shoulder press 80s.

So no, but I mean if you wanna make this an online pissing contest i can get some vids.

And no I don't claim to be the strongest person on the planet, but I have made some great progress.

EDIT: also to note, the fact that you think going over 75s on simple muscle group exercises

somehow shows great strength, probably reflects poorly on you.

Easy bro. Don't take it so personal.

However I also jumped out of my PF membership at the time when they removed ALL free-weights and hammer strength machines from the gym. Our DB's also only went to 65...which I quickly out grew.

Gold's is only 19.99 per month for me with unlimited classes and tanning. (Yeah I tan, no shame. Sometimes you gotta be superficial to be super official.)

So to answer your question OP...It was solid move for me on many fronts and I'd conclude it was certainly worth it.
  • Thanks, all! I actually ended up looking on their website and they offer a free 7 day trial with access to classes and tanning as well. Think I'm going to give it a shot this week and see what it's all about! They don't mention membership prices online, so I suppose I won't know the actual price difference until I go in and speak with somone there. I pay $20 for the membership at PF and to me, if I could get the membership at Gold's for the same price, with access to classes and tanning as well, I might make the switch anyway!

I was going to 24 hour Fitness, they have loads of classes and trainers. I could never attend a class those suckers would line up 30 minutes before the class and it would be packed. They one had one area where you could do functional training with exercise balls / bands etc. If a trainer had a client you had to leave the area.

So I left b/c I never got to take a class and Im not paying to be told I cant use certain areas of the gym.
