I tried the Jillian Michaels 30 day shred level 1 video over the weekend & I really liked it. I like that she helps us to tone & build lean muscle, instead of lifting heavier weights which I am finding is making me a bit bulky. I don't feel like it has enough cardio in it for me though & I really like to burn up some calories when I work out. Normally I do 45 mins on my elliptical machine & then some weight lifting focusing on my problem areas. All together my morning workout normally takes 60-80 mins. I'm thinking to I will start on my elliptical as usual, but just do 30 mins instead of 45 & then move right onto the shred dvd. What does everyone think? For those of you who have done the 30 day shred workouts did you find that you burned a lot of calories just doing the 20 min DVD alone or that you needed to incorporate additional exercise?

By your descriptions you won't get the results you want. You CAN'T work on the problem areas. Spot reduction is not possible. Heavy weights won't make you bulky (what you are more than likely seeing is water retention in your muscles)
30DS is a great cardio routine but its cardio. If you want the results you get by weight lifting you need to lift weights.0 -
If you have the will power to do home work out by your self it is a great work out! I myself like the gym because it motivates me. The other thing is if you are used to weight lifting- heavy weights- you should accommodate your dumbbells for JM videos. And regarding weight lifting if you have 3 weight training and 2-3 cardio session I don't think you will get bulky! unless you want to be fragile !!!!!!!!!!!
Good luck!0 -
Hey!
I do what you are saying you want to do. As I told you, I ordered the DVD and it will be here in a few weeks. But I do other dvds, Gunnar Peterson, Kathy Smith, Jane Fonda, etc. I always do some cardio first. Sometimes I do my entire speed walk then go and do the weights with DVD. I am trying to make it Tue, Thur and Sat that I do weights and a bit less cardio and then M, W, F and Sun I do just cardio. YES, I work out 7 days a week! It just feels so good, I love doing it so why stop!
I do agree with what one of the folks said below, it is hard to impossible to spot reduce. BUT! You can sculpt in spots. Cardio is the best for losing weight and weights to help sculpt and shape. Not to mention how good it is for your over all fitness, muscle mass, bone density, etc. Not sure how old you are, but I am 53 and in full blown menopause and working out has been so helpful. My numbers when I get the bone density test are that of a much younger woman.
Good luck and keep me posted about the DVD! I cannot wait to get mine!
By the way, what is your name? I am Chetan!
Take care and ciao from italy!0 -
Thanks for all the good information everyone. I am still going to incorporate weight lifting at the gym about 2 days a week I think.0

I know a lot of people say that weight lifting won't make you bulky. But in my case for some reason I build muscle very easily & my arms especially have gotten very muscular & people are like "Whoah! You need to lay off your arms!" And I agree with them. I want to look long, tone & lean & the weights have given me the opposite effect. I don't even lift very heavy. I just build muscle really easily. My legs are like a horse!0
