Larger Deficit after binge?

I've heard mixed things about this concept but what are y'all's thoughts on eating a large deficit on the days right after a large binge? Do you try and "make-up" for the overeating the day before or do you pretend that it didn't happen and just stick within your macros?

I have saved calories from previous days when I knew I was going out and I have paid back calories from the next day or two to make for an over day. As long as you are not starving yourself the next day or doing it as some sort of punishment I think it is fine.

I draw a line under it and start fresh otherwise I end up being hungry in the following days and failing.

I guess it's a compromise day for me to make up for the 3,500 I ate yesterday...

It depends on where I'm at. I will try for a few days before and/or after to add a few hundred calories to my deficit, but I don't get upset if I'm not able to. As long as you aren't having a binge day to often it should have a minimal impact on your overall progress.

It really only becomes a problem for me if I am using emotional reasons to alter a deficit after over eating. Like if I am doing it with shame attached or regret. It also seems to be a bad pattern to get into, but I think most thin people normally calorie-shift after or before a large meal. Doing it as a planned thing is different than doing it as a response to out-of-control eating.
  • I usually fast once a week, so I'll go 24 hours without eating anything but water and/or tea. And yeah, if I'm planning on having a fast on day X, I will sometimes be a bit less strict on the previous nite's dinner. I'm usually thinking at least 12-18 hours ahead, but on occasion, I've moved my fast day to fall on the day right after I've slipped up. It's worked pretty well.
