My boyfriend and I are bringing our little pug baby home on November 10th, and I'm wondering what you guys feed your pugs. My boyfriend and I live a very active lifestyle, I run almost every day and he's a cyclist. We also both walk quite a bit, usually going on nightly walks around our city. Our baby's breeder feeds on a completely raw food diet, and makes his own food at home, we cannot continue to feed raw food because our storage space for food is extremely limited (we only have a small top freezer and there isn't enough room to keep 35lbs of food). She will be coming home with a bag of the food she is raised on (so raw food) which will make it easier for us to switch over.

What brands do you find work best for your pugs? Right now I'm looking at...

Blue Buffalo Co.
Wellness (Puppy and then later Wellness Core, which is supposed to be Gluten free)
Acana/Orijen
Royal Canin Puppy, and later Pug Special Formula

Note: My boyfriends dad works for Purina Nestle, so we can get Purina free, but I'd rather do my research and find something else, not a big fan of Purina dog feeds.

    I work for a pet store, Wellness and Blue buffalo are great brands, they have more natural stuff then the commercial foods.

    I was looking at the Wellness today, I need to find something that is going to mimic the nutritional content of the raw food diet, and Wellness is not only widely available but also appears to have great nutritional content.

    I have been wanting to feed my little ones better food as well. So Iams is commercial, does that make it a no-no? Right now I give them Purina Little Bites and once they finish the bag, they won't get any more of that.

    EDIT: I don't have a pug, but I think all of us who care for our pets want to give them the best.

    Look for Brands that have Chicken, Turkey, Beef as the first few ingredients, instead of fillers like corn (dogs don't even process corn)

    Blue Buffalo Is a good brand though.

    This. I also like Natural Balance and rotate between the three brands for my Frenchie.

    We used to feed Innova, but we've recently switched to Nature's Variety natural raw boost which is grain-free. We're testing it to see if he has developed a grain allergy, per our vet's recommendation.

    I feed my 10 yr old pug Science Diet small bites. Any time we switch she gets sick so we are sticking with it.

    Warning about pugs: They shed so ridiculously much that had I known, I may not have gotten one. They are very sharp hairs that plug your vaccum, stick in your couch, and even give your splinters. You also have to get their anal glands squeezed (YUCK!!!) or they will smell! And mine can't be walked because she has serious trouble breathing in the heat and long distances. Other than that they are great!

    I knew all about the shedding, we were very impressed with our breeders dogs, they didn't shed at all on me when we were at the breeder, and their house was spotless. Our apartment is small and I'm used to having dogs (my mum breeds poodles, and when I was a kid we had labs, also high shedders). I made sure to find a breeder who's dogs had more of a muzzle and less wrinkles. :) we're very excited to bring her home!

    I feed our little guy Wellness. I used to order food made by a Vet in Florida but he developed an allergy to it after 4 yrs, so now he gets Wellness.

    When you are ready to switch your puppy's food make sure you do it gradually, slowly adding in a little more of the new food to the old each time until it's all the new stuff.

    Much appreciated, I'm reaaaally thinking the Wellness Core Puppy is the best option, and probably will be as close to raw as I will be able to get haha.

    My pug is 6 y/o and we've tried a number of different foods - the biggest indicator that it wasn't going to work was how quickly his weight would fluctuate. I'm happy with Pedigree for small dogs. He's at a very healthy weight, very active (for a pug), it's affordable and easy to find. I thought I had to buy some fancy shmancy brand but you'll see how each affects him.

    The one HUGE thing to look out for is dog foods imported from China and the like that contain chicken... they have been found to make dogs very ill. I only buy dog foods and treats made in the US and do study up on the ingredients.

    I heartily reccommend Wellness brand. I feed it to my beagle mix and her pee doesn't even burn our lawn she's that well balanced.

    I don't have a Pug but I do have a Pekingese and 9 other breeds... I've done tons of research on dog food but I have to buy what is the most economical for feeding 8+ dogs. I feed Diamond Naturals Chicken and Rice... It's a 4 star food.

    I have less than zero storage for a raw diet. It's unfortunate, because we would purchase from our breeder if we could keep it but our breeder is 2 hours away, and we have a tiny freezer.

    We sell raw food, it can be pretty expensive....but very good for dogs (and cats).

    Mine is a puggle (half pug half beagle). He eats the Chicken soup brand. My hubby found out about all the glutten and how bad it was for dogs and cats (we have three) and switched them all.

    Like xJT said, switch it slowly to they do not get sick.

    You know there are also the raw patties which don't take up much space, right? Stella and Chewy's makes some... you have to go to a specialty dog shot (ie not petco, petsmart) but if you're so stuck on "close to raw" why not do the premade raw food?

    went throuhg lots of stuff that gave them diarrhea...
    Did blue buffalo. MAde them really sick once, switched off. Did not like the inconsistent quality of the food.

    Now I use Canidae... So far so good.

    My aunt is a dog breeder/trainer she feeds her dogs raw as well, look into making your own using meat from a butcher as well as produce, etc. There are a lot of sites that offer information about feeding raw. I do raw with my dog, here is a useful site (http://voices.yahoo.com/how-feed-dog-raw-food-diet-budget-679495.html), be sure to ask your vet about how to feed your dog raw in a do-it-yourself manner, they will be able to help. BARF is the name of the "raw" diet for dogs/a good place to gather information.

    I agree that Wellness or Blue Buffalo are great choices.

    I have a friend who has a pug and she makes her pug's food. It's pretty simple-1 pkg of ground beef or turkey. a package of frozen peas/carrots and brown rice. She makes it about twice a week and his health problems are gone. Her vet approved this diet also :)

    :-( I didn't know. Guess I'm a bad puppy mom! No, I figured it wasn't the best (not McDonald's bad though). I am definitely changing it shortly.

    Not a dog owner but I have two cats that used to be on Royal Canin (the shelter we got them from fed it to them and I couldn't get them off of it for the longest time ).

    Don't use it! Its all corn and meat by-product - basically crack for dog/cats.

    Agree that you should go for a feed where meat is the first few ingredients.
