HRM w/ GPS question

I'm a new runner/jogger who is debating buying a HRM with a GPS/footpod. I also want to be able to use whatever I get to monitor calorie burn on things other than running.
I keep looking at the Garmin 210 Forerunner and the Polar FT60 with footpod upgrade. Both are about the same price point but I think the Polar would be more accurate on HR and the Garmin would be more accurate on run pace.
My main concerns with the Garmin--
Can you use the HRM without the GPS?
My main concern with the Polar FT60--
What is it's long-term durability?
So who has used one of these models? Did it hold up over time? Do I even need to track run pace, or would I be better off with a smaller-gun HR monitor like the FT4?

I have an FT60 that's lasted a long time... But it doesn't have a built in GPS. I've read really bad reviews about the Polar GPS units. I'd encourage you to get a HRM that has an integrated GPS, not an external one
Edit: I mean to say that the Polar EXTERNAL GPS unit gets bad marks. I'm not sure about their watches with built-in GPS but I'd rather pay more for a built-in GPS than carry/pay for a GPS transmitter separately.0 -
I just use my iPhone for my GPS. It works quite well (not perfect, but pretty good)0

I use a Garmin FR405. It is very dependable and I like it very much. I can turn the gps feature off. I've looked up the manuals for the 210 and can't find anyplace where it says that you can do that. Personally I would recommend the 610 (or 910XT if you are planning to do triathlons).
I have used Polar HRMs but that was many years ago so I don't have any current personal experience with them. I will say that I have talked to few people who dislike them. Most everyone who uses them is Polar for life.0
