Protein Sources

I see a lot of people asking about sources of protein, especially for people curious about going veg or vegan. My veg friend sent me this, and I thought it would be interesting to share.
I'm not veg myself, but try not to eat a lot of meat.
EDIT: Yes, this is percentage of the vegetable in question. You have to eat A LOT of these veggies to get the same amount of protein in meat.
I'd be happy to chat about trophic levels if you'd like.

I already saved it. thanks for sharing. I can definitely use this poster.0

It's a "by-volume" thing. You have to eat a crap load of mushrooms, spinach, and kale to get the same amount of protein that is in that steak.0

I do think this is good but also important to remember these are not calorie dense foods......so even though the percentage of calories from protein is I high the grams are low......i.e. I can eat four cups of spinach which is a lot and only get 4 grams of protein.0

Just did some preliminary math inn my head and their numbers seem of as well.......In 20 calls worth of spinach there are 2 grams of protein. So in 110 calories of chicken (since it is less protein dense than spinach) should have less than 11 grams but it has 22 grams. Chicken is almost completely protein.....little bit of fat and no carbs......just for the record.0

Yeah. Looking at it now, I'm not so sure about the meat percentages. They do seem waaaay off.0 -

Yeah, it's miles off. I just looked up some recent beef, chicken and eggs that I ate. Rough numbers:
Chicken was 92% protein
Beef was 56% protein
Eggs were 40% protein
Sure, spinach also has a high percentage of protein too (roughly 50%) but the 4 cups of baby spinach I put in my protein shake was only 6g of protein. I'd burst eating enough of it to sustain me. 4 cups was the whole bag!
Hooray balanced diets!0 -
I'm veg and I get most my protein from powder: LIfe's Basics Chocolate. It has brown rice as majority and additions of pea and hemp with some chia. These are great sources of protein.
It mixes in a blender bottle...um B+ ish. Always better in a blender with some berries. You can add spinach (I know it sound horrible, but it's not) and it will really help with your iron (which many women are low in).
If you're not a veg yet, bison is about the best meat you can get for protein, iron, and very low fat. Better than turkey and much better than chicken.
Good luck!0 -
Not vegan nor will I ever be, however you can get vegan protein shakes to assist with supplementation of protein..Just sayin.0
