You can watch videos on youtube for proper stroke form.
There is also an iphone app called Pace Club for training techniques, tracking your progress and logging your swims.

Find the book "Total Immersion Swimming" by Terry Laughlin

I tried watching videos and reading books, but nothing beats a personal trainer. I hired one for 4-5 lessons and that was enough for a noticeable improvement.

I just took a swimming class at the local Rec center, at 42 I can now swim. FINALLY
  • I just recently learned to swim. I took an adult swim class and it was great.

Swim classes all the way. The videos are all well and good but nothing beats a tutor who can physically show you what to do.

Three essentials for pleasant swimming (otherwise it can be a nightmare!)

1 - proper breathing technique - you can't pant in a pool! So being able to control how and when you breathe is really, really important. If you're just learning make sure you learn how to breath both sides.

2 - proper kicking technique - frequently overlooked - if you're kicking properly you get *less* tired than if you're not, this goes for all strokes

3 - warming up / warming down - just like any other sport you need to warm up / warm down in the pool - set a warmup period (ie 10 minutes) then stretch properly before you do the workout.

Good luck! I just started swimming again after close to 10 years hiatus, it is one of the best things I've done - great for general fitness, very low impact, and very satisfying.
