Help! It hurts!

Every time I do lunges or squats, my knees HURT! They hurt while I am doing them, and for the whole day after - and sometime even sore the next day. What am I doing wrong?? I weigh 79kg (sorry don't know what that is in pounds!) and have been doing the zumba dvd's - and I am finding it quite painful :-(

This can happen and you can cause harm to your knees if you do them without correct form. My advice is to stop doing them until you learn correct form.

The lower you go (*kitten* to grass) the easier it is on your knees. Look up proper squat and lunge form on youtube. There's a ton of info out there.

Also, some people's knees just can't handle those movements. I know people who lift heavy but can't do lunges because of their knees. It's okay not to do them if it causes pain.

Just make sure you take an extra pair of clean underwear and shorts

Also, if you go to a gym I'm sure there are plenty of workers there who are more than willing to help show you proper form. :) Or just ask one of the cute muscle men to show you. ;)

Assuming no other underlying injury or problems (like arthritis) the most common reason for knee pain during squats and lunges is incorrect form. (if you search on google you'll find videos etc demonstrating correct form or if needed spend a session with a trainer)

A certain level of discomfort (rather than acute pain) is not unusual when first starting out and your body is adapting to new exercises.

If you're experiencing acute pain you should take a break and use RICE (Rest, Ice,Compression & Elevation) to treat yourself.

Squats & lunges are great exercises when they're done right.

When doing squats and lunges you should be able to see your toes over your knees, your bum should really stick out, like your about to sit down. When my clients have done this they've had no trouble with their knees.
  • knees should not be hurting.
    all down to bad form.
seek professional advice/trainers till you get the form down.
