I dont even kow what the machines are called. I'm going to ask the workers at my gym to show me around the equipment. I know i want to work on core muscle groups and squats are a dreaded but good thing but im not sure where to start.

The New Rules of Lifting for Women.

Buy the book, or search in this forum for others who have used it. It is a GREAT program for someone wanting to get into weight lifting and have no idea where to start.

Check out the book called "New Rules of Lifting for Women" and the corresponding group on here. I am a true beginner, too, and it's been doing wonders for me!

Start here. Read through the instructions. Plenty of options, but that also means some homework on your part.

    http://www.exrx.net/WeightTraining/Instructions.html

Decide how many days you'll give to it, which will tell you which type of program you can do.

As you click on body parts to work, you can select what type of workout to give them depending on what you have to use.
Watch the proper form for what you will do.
    Use the template form.

Reading "New Rules of Lifting for Women" is definitely a good start. You can also check out the Body for Life program if you'd rather weight train one body section at a time as opposed to total body workouts. If you look at the weight section program you can google the name of all the exercises, and between looking at pictures and videos I think you'll figure out the proper form. :)

I'll triple it.....New rules of lifting for women!! Here's a list of compound moves that will do awesome things to your body -

    Overhead Press
    Bench Press
    Dead lifts
    Squats and lunges
    pushups and pullups

Leave those 2lbs and 5lbers sitting on the rack and choose heavy weights that will challenge you!!!

New Rules of Lifting for Women (as suggested by others).

I am personally doing Strong Lifts 5x5 - I like it because it's a little simpler (very little variation in the exercises) and it gets me in & out of the gym faster. It's a great program for beginners.

You may want to give Jamie Eason's 12 week trainer a look over @ bodybuilding.com

DK about NROLFW- my wife got the book- isnt through it yet-- I really liked Stronglifts 5x5-- you get a lot of advertising crap when you sign up (free) to get the workout spreadsheet- but if you ignore it all it is a nice easy program to start with. if you've never ever lifted before, it might serve you well to hire a trainer once or twice to review form... so important, blew my back out a couple of months ago when I got sloppy.... ouch

You can buy Starting Strength which is basically what Stronglifts is a rip off of and just replace the power cleans with barbell rows despite the book advising against it in bold lettering ;)

I also recommend a trainer if your gym offers it and you can afford it. Books are good to tell you different routines, but nobody will be there to correct your form which is key anyway. Or you can always ask someone there. A lot of people are willing to help or demonstrate you need to do.

I was recommended the book "Body For Life." I really liked it. I have back problems so I cannot always lift the weights required for the intensity they recommend, but I feel better when I am following it. It helps my back too.
  • I think you would really enjoy ChaLean Extreme. It is weight lifting 3 times a week and then cardio 2 times a week and it is a great way to start off with weight lifting:)
