Hi! I'm looking for an app that will help with speed training. I'm currently doing the C25K program (week 6!!)... on the treadmill... at home.... because I'm too chicken to go outside. BUT, next week I have 4 C25K workouts planned, and one of them will be an outside interval run. I'd like to start incorporating one workout per week outside that focuses on an increase in speed. I'm not talking 10MPH... I'd like simply to go from the 5-6MPH I do on the treadmill to a constant 6-6.5MPH. Any suggestions?

If you have a smart phone like an iPhone or an Android you can use RunKeeper. I use it. It's free and provides lots of great information. It shows your pace/speed, distance, a map of your route, elevation change, and even gives an estimate of calories burned. I'm currently training for a 5k as well. This will probably do everything you want and more.
Of course you'll need something to hold your phone. Get an arm holder or hand holder like I have. This is the brand I'm using.

Thanks! I was thinking maybe I'd just download the C25K app and do sprint intervals with the week 1 workouts. Then add some speed to some of the shorter runs. Last night I did W6D2 and ran at 6.5 - 7.0 mph for the last 7 mins of both run intervals - felt awesome and totally doable!
I will check out the RunKeeper app as well. Do you use a treadmill in addition to your outdoor runs and do you find it more challenging outdoors?0 -
I like the RunKeeper app on my Android. I like the voice telling me how far I've gone, and at what pace etc, plus it gives you a map based on the GPS signal. It also has (though I haven't used this yet) workouts that you can use (or add your own) for interval training.0

Do you use a treadmill in addition to your outdoor runs and do you find it more challenging outdoors?
I was using the treadmill exclusively up until August but now I mostly run outdoors. No question that the outdoor running is harder. I can run on a treadmill at 7.5 for 30 minutes now no problem. Outside simply running at 6 mph feels about the same. Supposedly adding a 1% incline makes the treadmill closer to what running outside is like.
I enjoy outdoor running soooooo.... sooooo (This could go on forever) so much more. While it does feel harder you find that you enjoy it so much more at the same time. Yesterday morning I did a little over 4 miles just before sunrise. I had a cool lightning storm off to my right and when the sun started coming up beautiful pink and orange clouds on my left. Then there was the 5 cranes that kept flying in circles really low in front of me. Occasionally there are spider webs. Fun! There are just constant little things that occupy your mind and distract you from being bored. Inside all you see is the same 4 walls or the television in front of you.
I think the biggest difference in my speed came when I started running outside. You tend to run a lot further than on the treadmill and the endurance helps increase your overall speed. Also you can't really quit. If I just ran 2 miles out away from my house, I sort of have to get back there eventually. Might as well run back even if I feel tired.
Did I mention that the gym is right outside? Start running outside some and the track starts 2 steps from your front door. Another plus for me. Driving to the gym to run is a bit of a time waster. MY gym is close but by the time I drive there I could already have a mile to one and a half miles done at home.0 -

^^This. The distance/pace prompts are great. You can set it to talk every so often based on distance, time, or both. I have mine set to squawk at me every 2 minutes.0 -

I use the Nike+ Running. I tag my shoes, it also talks to you, but my GPS is a little wonky.0 -
I have a treadmill at home... so I don't have to travel very far. I've avoided running outdoors because, frankly, for some reason - I just feel embarrassed. It's weird. There are tons and tons of trails in my town - I have to just do it. Since I'm a beginner and still working through my C25K program, would it be ok to run 2 days in a row... or should I just wait for my next scheduled run to go outside?
Side note: I just downloaded that app and can't begin to say how excited I am that downhill skiing is listed as an activity!0 -
If you've got the hankerin', just go for it!
You will find running outside harder than the treadmill. Just be ready for that! I was stunned at how hard it was compared to an elliptical machine the first time I hit the roads again. But, if you plan on actually, you know, running, there really is no substitute for getting out there and doing the real thing. Better to go through that adjustment now than when you do your first race.0 -

Should be just fine. Just pay attention to things like sore shins or knees. If you need a break then take one. I did 4 miles Monday, 2 on Tuesday, 4 Wednesday but took a break for today. 4 more miles tomorrow. Rest days here and there are needed but running back to back is no issue as far as I know.0 -

I use Runkeeper as well - love that it tells me my distance and average pace every five minutes. I ran it simultaneously with my c25k app with no problems - it was nice to have the route and distance mapped out.0

Thank you everyone! I will let you know how it goes... on Sunday... when I run outside for the 1st time. Sticking to the treadmill for tomorrow AM. I think I'll keep up with C25K every other day as planned... only a few more weeks to go... and make sure at least 1 day/week is outside. Yay, excited!0

Should be just fine. Just pay attention to things like sore shins or knees. If you need a break then take one. Back to back shouldn't be a problem for you. As of June I hadn't ran since 1983. Since July 1st I've covered more than 350 miles including about 29 miles running each of the past 5 days. The important thing is to pay attention to your body. Your knees, ankles, heels, and Achilles will let you know when you need a day off. Personally, I find running outside much easier than a treadmill. I tend to get a little wobbly when I'm on the treadmill and I prefer being able to control my speed with my legs rather than with electronics.0 -
Did my 1st run outside... had to walk on 3 different occasions during my session. Verdict: I love my treadmill!!! It killed being outside... I guess something to work towards.... in the spring! : )

I always did C25K outside, and no i never experienced clenching my teeth.
My suggestion is when you run outside, run slow.. like super slow. Treadmills are an awful thing for running because it helps propel you instead of you doing all the work.0 -
there is an HIIT App, named simply, HIIT. you can set it to have a warm up period of X amount of minutes, and the as many intervals as you want, with however you want them spaced out. maybe you want to sprint 30 seconds and jog 30 seconds, or 30 and 10, or whatever. then you have a cool down period that you can also set.
but with running, you usually have to either work for distance or for speed. never both at the same time/run.
and i'm sure it has been said already, but take your runs outdoors. ditch the treadmill.0
