Do salads give you dry mouth?

I had my salad for lunch today.. Spinach, tomatoes, carrots, cucumber, roasted corn, and hardboiled eggs with a little ranch dressing, and now my mouth is like a big ball of cotton! I realized my salads have been doing this to me for quite some time. Any idea why? I drink between 9-12 glasses of eater per day and eat lots of fruits and veggies, and my lunch salads are the only thing that do this to me...

Am I just weeeeeeeeeeerd? Dont answer that...

Hmm - I have noticed that fresh spinach can give me that sort of dry mouth feeling. Not like I'm all dried out and thirsty, it's mainly my teeth... I can't explain it.
    Maybe we're both weird.

You're weird! No, wait, it's that you're eating spinach in your salad. Oxalic acid will do that to you. Bad and bad for you! You can try adding a citrus (or something else with Vit C) to fix it, or cook the spinach and eat lettuce salads instead.

It doesnt bother me, but I know the spinach salad feeling you are talking about
For most people the oxalic acid In spinach and other foods are not really a problem (I think people with kidney problems are an exception) and the benefits outweigh concerns. Oxalic acid inhibits absorption of iron and calcium but spinach and other greens still have nutrients worth consuming. If you like spinach eat it, if you are sensitive don't. You might try baby spinach or other greens for your salads.
  • I am using baby spinach. I didn't know about the acid in it, thanks for the heads up! I'll make sure I eat an orange or something citrusy during or after eating my salad (I cannot eat fruit on a salad, not my thing). Thank you so much!!!
  • I just learned something new, and solved the pesky "spinach makes my teeth feel funny" issue.
