LADIES~ Appetite and time of the month?

Ladies, Do any of you notice your appetite increase while you have your period? Or even during ovulation? I swear mine always increases and it drives me nuts! lol. I feel like I can never eat enough during those times. Anyone else notice this?

I don't think mine really increases, I just think I'm hungrier and use my time of the month as the excuse. But then again, with all that women have to go through, we can use the excuse to indulge once a month ;) Bring on the chocolate.

i get the craziest cravings for desserts and pastries. CARBS are my friends during that time.. which sucks cause then i get mad at myself everytime i go over my cal intake.

I also have a hard time drinking lots of water too ...

I don't think my appetite increases. I definitely used to use PMS as an excuse to eat whatever I want, but since I've been more conscientious of my diet, it doesn't seem like that TOM or the week leading up to it is any different for me diet wise, and I didn't see any fluctuation in my weight either. The best part was that for the first two months, I wasn't having PMS symptoms AT ALL. No painful boobs, no noticable bloating, no cramps. It was like my period came with no warning, but that was AWESOME to me. It only lasted the first two months though; this last month I got the breast tenderness a week in advance like I normally do, although my cramps were less severe than I'm used to and my period has definitely been lighter than I'm used to too, so I guess that's alright.
  • Oh my goodness yes!! My appetite for carbs and sugar is horrid sometimes.. especially at night! I went over my calories this week for the first time in a month because I was pms'n =( It's strange tho.. once I start I'm back to normal!!
  • Oh yes! Food, food, food! All I want is chips, and choclate!!!! You are not alone my friend.

LOL!!! You ladies have made me laugh! Weird isn't it? I was curious so I just read an article and it said that the increase in appetite is caused by the elevated levels of estrogen and progesterone. Estrogen speeds up the metabolism 5-15%, hence the reason for the increased appetite. Our bodies are burning calories at a faster rate- up to 300 calories more per day during the first 5 days. Our BMR actually goes UP during our periods and around ovulation. It was suggested, if hungry, to go ahead and eat 100-200 calories more per day during that time without feeling guilty :) It's likely that if we are feeling more hungry than usual during that week that it's our bodies way of telling us calories are being burned at a faster rate. They still encouraged eating "smart" foods, but if you want the occasional chocolate or some extra carbs this is a good week for it.

Needless to say, I was happy to read this article.
