I have a very senstive stomach and their are just certain things i cannot eat without having terrible stomaches, I went to dinner last night with a girlfriend and something i ate made me sick, It seems to last way too long. My mom was telling me that when she used to get stomaches like this (runs in the family) She woud take a gentle laxtive to speed up getting the food out of her system, Im just curoious if it would effect my efforts I know that laxtives make you lose alot of your water weight and dehydrate you and I know some people use them as a quick cleanse and I dont want the side effects of that! (Meaning I know alot of people that do that lose weight then feel starving and binge eat) any advice is welcom as always

Try out an herbal tea called "Smooth Moves". It's completely natural, and I would take it when I had trouble going.

But it could contradict your condition, so be very careful, or even consult a doctor before you take it.0 -
This isn't really something you should be asking in a forum like this... go to your doctor to rule out any medical issues. Your mom had a *similar* problem but you don't know it's the same problem. Make a list of what you eat when you feel like this... it could help them rule out allergies/sensitivities0

Until you get in to see your doctor, you could get a bottle of Kyodophilus at your local health food store. Take a bunch of it when you have stomach upset. You'll feel better within 15 minutes. It's human probiotics (not plant based).0

there are many issues that can cause stomach upset, I always thought that I just had bad ibs-not so I recently found out I have celiac disease and cuting out the gluten contaning foods in my life has started to make a huge difference. Definetly go see you docter before changing your routine or taking any laxatives or diruetics. A lot of people don't know but once your body becomes used to going with the constant help of medications/ supplements it is very difficult and sometimes impossible to retrain yourself to "go" on your own. Definitely see your dr before making any conclusions.0

Yes I have been tested, I guess i should have been more specific i am midly allergic to many things and very lactose intollerant. Generally the stomache comes from eating something im midly allergic too, however since i learned what im allegric too i dont eat them however there must have been something in the food my girlfriend cooked last night.0

As the previous poster said, this really is something that needs to be checked out by your doctor. Did your mother ever find out what was causing her stomach problems? Laxatives, although helpful short term, will only alleviate the symptoms but could actually cause more problems in the long run. Many GI disorders, if left untreated, can lead to deficiencies and associated problems (e.g. coeliacs have problems absorbing calcium which causes early onset osteoporosis). Stomach problems can also be caused by anxiety so obviously laxatives or other OTC digestion remedies will do nothing to help that.
Please go see your doctor!0 -
Ooops! We must have been posting at the same time!
Based on what you've said above, personally I'd still avoid laxatives as they can become habit forming.0 -

If you are having GI issue on a regular basis, you really need to see your doctor!0 -
Well, you need to talk to your doctor.
Get some testing done - but because testing is NOT 100% accurate (or your douche doc won't run tests and tries to fix it with a pill like most of mine have), you start an elimination diet. Which is, removing the Top 8 allergens from your system for a full 6 weeks, then adding them back in slowly and one at a time.
If this is something you deal with a lot, you should consider it. It might not be just some 'tummy trouble'. That usually means there's something else going on.
For me, it was wheat, gluten, oats, and buckwheat. Removal of these foods has increased my energy, headaches are gone, joint pain and inflammation are 90% gone, and I don't live with constant diarrhea anymore.
And it does take time. You have to give it 6 weeks to make sure all the offending foods are out of your system.
Good luck.0 -

Ah, just saw this.
Obviously foods you're allergic to can cause this. You need to be more careful about the foods you're 'mildly' allergic to. Try some Miralax if you're having trouble going, its non-habit forming. And possibly some Benadryl.0 -
I think using laxatives in this manner sounds like a bad idea, espcially if it's something that happens regularly. Regular laxative use can cause your body not to absorb much of the nutrition in foods. You should see a doctor or if you don't want to do that, try something like Tums or Prilosec OTC. You might also consider taking a daily probiotic.0

I have an intolerance to a lot of foods and have a similar problem. Since it is too hard for me to avoid all of the foods I am sensitive to I usually just have to deal with the pain, but I'm pretty good at knowing when it will hit and how long it will last. With the intolerance, I won't always have the offending food in my system anymore even though I'm having the reaction. So taking laxitives wouldn't help. If you are used to the pain lasting a certain amount of time and it is lasting longer, it is possible that something else is causing it. There is a bug going around causing stomach upset. If it doesn't go away or gets worse, I would see a doctor. You might want to talk to them anyway since allergies can become worse the more you are exposed to the allergen.0

Do you have more information on the elimination diet you did? I cut out wheat, dairy and sugar for 3 weeks under a naturopaths orders. But it made no difference in my digestive issues. I've been poked, and scoped both ways. All to end up with an IBS diagnosis. I'm trying to work up the will power to do a proper elimination diet.0 -
3 weeks is not enough time. You need a minimum of 4 weeks, and preferably 6.
I was nursing at the time, trying to figure out my infants allergies. I was Top 8 and Corn free. I eat brown rice, veggies, fruits, used olive oil, and ate meat. That was it. You have to start getting creative after awhile, lol! It was 6 years ago, I don't remember all the specifics, but Dr. Sears had a bunch of info on his website. You can google Total Elimination Diet. Sometimes, its a food that you least suspect (a girlfriend learned her daughter was severely allergic to coconut and corn, which are in EVERYTHING). Then, after the full 6 weeks, you add food back in, one thing at a time. You trial wheat, and do it for 2 weeks (unless you have a reaction), then dairy, and on and on. It sucks, BUT, its worth it if you're miserable all the time. I couldn't live like that anymore. I had an IBS diagnosis too. Isn't it really about how you want to live your life? Sick and miserable and eating whatever you want? Or happy, healthy, and eating well? I get a lot of crap about my 'diet'... but its not a diet - its a lifestyle. I choose not to eat things that make me sick. If I make the choice to eat something bad for my body, then I'm going to really really regret it. And I'm not going to spend life strapped to a toilet...Well, you need to talk to your doctor.

Smooth moves made me feel like I had a knife in my gut. I'd suggest you work on adding more fruits and veggies to your diet. They are healthy, natural, and a REAL laxative if taken in the correct "dosage"! = D0 -
I wouldn't take laxatives to speed up the process. Go to the doctor and get tested for food allergies.0

You need to go to the doctor and get checked out. It could be a simple food allergy or something worse. Either way you shouldn't just let it go.0

My dad's girlfriend is moderately allergic to certain foods, and she can take a certain medicine (not sure about the name) to make those foods tolerable when she wants to have them. I would recommend just plowing through it unless your allergies can get complicated, and talking to your girlfriend about certain things you can't have. It's probably gonna be easier on your body than laxatives.0
