A co-worker told me that he lost weight really fast and it affected his thyroid glands. Now he needs to take a pill every single day for the rest of his life. Any truth to this? I'm a little worried.

Hmmm, I'm not a doctor, but I don't think so. Maybe he lost the weight so quickly because of a hyper thyroid. If this were true all the biggest loser people, and gastric bypass/lap band surgery people would be at risk.

i would think that as long as you're losing no more than 2 pounds a week, you're fine. i think that's the whole thing about healthy weight loss (1-2 pounds per week)....it doesn't cause the health problems that can arise with crash dieting and such. i think.

People keep talking about a "safe" rate of loss. But really it's not how much you lose each week, it's how you lose it that makes it safe or not safe. If you are eating healthy and getting in all your micronutrients, then you should be fine. If you are eating weird foods (like only cabbage soup), even if you are only losing 1-2 lb. a week, you are going to be messing up your body.

Of course, it's hard to eat 600 calories a day and get in all your nutrients. But it's easy to get in 1600 calories a day and still not get in all your nutrients. Heck, I lost my gallbladder doing Nutrisystem in the 80s and I was losing 1 pound a week, not two. But I wasn't getting in enough fat. (They've since changed their diet to include more fat.)

Also, the doctors at that time told me that 1-2 pound a week is still considered rapid weight loss as far as things like your gallbladder are concerned.
