Hello, my name is Amie and I'm obese.

I've been on this diet for some time, if you can call it that, but my name is Amie. I'm 21 years old, I'm 5'4" and weigh 250lbs. I'm completely ashamed of what I eat, so I continue to eat. I eat my feelings even if I'm happy. I eat because I feel like I deserve it and basically I feel like I need to eat all the time. I don't remember the last time I felt hungry. My main problems are carbs like french fries, baked potatoes, mac n cheese, pasta, spaghetti and sweets like soda and candy. I came on here after advice given to me from my therapist because I am being treated for Bipolar, all the medicines I take cause weight gain and I don't want to be a statistic. It's been somewhat easy losing weight so far but now I've hit a brick wall. I'm indulging in sweets and soda more often probably because of my job. I stand in one place all day long and don't get very many breaks. It's hard for me to exercise because my gut is so huge but at this point I am willing to do anything to lose 100lbs and get back to being healthy again. I'm not sure if I'm doing this right or if my goals are too high. Any advice is appreciated.

Hi Amie.
I don't know if your 100lb goal is to big, but I think it helps if you break it down into smaller mini-goals. For example, decide on a small reward for every 10lbs you lose (for example a manicure, new shoes, whatever you find motivational).
And do give yourself a pat on the back EVERY time you meet your calorie goal; every time you weigh in and have lost some.
If you don't feel like "exercise", go for a walk and increase how far you walk each day.
I know it is a lot harder for you as you are also dealing with your bi-polar. I hope you get some responses from others who have some experience with this too. If you want to add me as a friend, feel free.0 -

Everyone carries weight differently, so it's hard to tell how much you should lose. I was about 220lbs after having my 2nd baby, but I didn't have problems exercising. I'm now 174lbs, and wear a US size 10 mainly, but some 8s fit. So I don't always trust weight, which is why I personally prefer to measure myself once a month. I do weigh myself too, but I weigh more than I look like I do, so I don't want to get hung up on it.
If you don't really exercise, then just start going on long walks to begin with. Then maybe once you feel more comfortable, you could join a gym. If I don't exercise I find it hard to lose weight.
Definitely break your goals down, and reward yourself when you reach each 10lb loss, or each 2 inch loss or whatever.
I'd also cut down on the carbs and sweet things. See if you can swap them - say swap potatoes for sweet potatoes, and eat wholemeal pasta instead, or just cut down on portion sizes. For sweet things, eat a piece of fruit, or low fat yoghurt.
You're young, you should be able to do it. Good luck!0 -
Hi Amie,
First of all, I am Bipolar too, so I can relate to you on that score. It can makes things hard
My advise is don't give yourself such a huge goal. Something that big can be daunting and intimidating. Try small goals that help you work towards that goal. Like start with trying to drink more water everyday instead of sodas. After you get that down try making sure you get your full servings of fruits and veggies. Next maybe try going on a 20 minute walk everyday. Give yourself small goals that all build up to towards weight loss and a healthier lifestyle.
You can do it!0
