BMI - Obese

Height: 6 feet, 5 inches
Weight: 270 pounds
Body Fat: 26.5%

Your BMI is 32, indicating your weight is in the Obese category for adults of your height.

My body fat is 26.5%. People say I look good at this weight but according to the CDC I am Obese. I would defintely like to loose more body fat and get in the 18-22% range.

Look at my pictures... Would you call me Obese?

I don't know but my dad at your height and weight couldn't walk from arthritis, he can't carry any extra weight on him at all.

Definately not obese, your body type is my favorite rawrrrrr LOL!!!

ETA: People need to realize you are super tall. My ex was 6'6" and 220lbs and he looks lanky...
  • I don't get that chart...Can't be good to go around calling people not just overweight but OBESE.
  • It makes no sense. My husband is 6'2" and at 235 he looked fabulous and he was considered in the obese range.

I think the chart is off a little when it gets into taller people. Im a 6ft tall female and it places me in a weight range that makes me look ill! Ive been very skinny in the past but never been out of the "obese category" according to charts. I go by the belief that when you feel good and are happy with what you see in the mirror then you have hit your goal weight. Good luck!

The chart on MFP says I am 0.5 away from being healthy - so I am overweight, but the one we use at work for our patients say I am healthy already. So you don't even know which one to trust!

You are definitely not obese, honestly you don't even look a little overweight. I don't get it, how they can classify everyone into the same chart? So frustrating!
  • My boss and me were talking about the stupid BMI chart today, It's dumb, He is SOOO not even obese (very fit). It says for my height 5'10 I should be 125-169lbs and I would never come anywhere close to 125lbs and if I did you would think I had aids.
  • that's why it's recommended to not solely use BMI as an indication of weight etc. everyone has different body types.

you dont look obese to me. Those charts I believe are based on old standards (but most people dont fall within the weights recommended on the charts). You look great. Keep up the good work.

Are you all serious? 25%+ body fat IS obese.

[Edit] - Of course, I'm not sure how you're measuring your body fat either so this could be an inaccuracy and if that's the case then I apologize for calling you obese as there are many ways one can miscalculate their body fat percentage.

No disrespect intended for the original poster. Generally the BMI is a really ****ty scale to go off of but it will always provide a "general" scope for its users. I just checked my BMI and it ranked me overweight (1 point below obese) and I'm currently 12% body fat. Basically what I'm trying to say is don't take your BMI seriously.

    Keep working hard!

43 waist just above belly button...43.5 waist at widest point..so .99

Thanks for the compliment. I have been working hard.

    Women
    Essential fat 10–13%
    Athletes 14–20%
    Fitness 21–24%
    Average 25–31%
    Obese 32%+

    Men
    Essential fat 2–5%
    Athletes 6–13%
    Fitness 4–17%
    Average 18–24%
    Obese 25%+

BMI is meant as a very general way to estimate body fat using characteristics that are very easy to measure (height and weight). It is useful for statistical purposes but it is not a great method of measuring fitness on an individual level. If you've had your body fat measured, using calibers or displacement, it is very easy to tell what category you fall under (see charts above). If you know your body fat percentage, don't even worry about BMI.

The BMI does not take into consideration muscle mass and bone mass. I am 6'0, 238Ibs and I am also considered obese according to BMI. Ignore it.

Yah I'm a size 16/18 at 5'11" and apparently I'm going to be obese until I hit 210.
Everyone is saying 'You can't loose 70 more pounds, you're going to look sick.'

Guess we'll find out. Honestly I'd be happy just to hit 200. :3
    44 pounds to go.
Frame size, muscle...all those things factor in too.
I don't like BMI... it makes me angry. LOL

Not obese but it's not surprising. It's long been established that BMI is a good, but imperfect guide. According to the BMI guideline, Patriots QB Tom Brady is overweight in theory.

I used to be fat but it didn't take a BMI calculation to know that. I used a mirror. But, the BMI scale said I was fat too.

My husband is also considered to be overweight by BMI. Our doctor has told him that for athletes/fit people the BMI is not a good indicator of health. Since they/you are so muscular, your weight is higher. We all know that muscle is more compact and therefore heavier than a like volume of fatty tissue. You look GOOD! Like an above poster, I say focus on the fat percentage versus BMI.

Where do you get the 125Ibs for 5'10 ?
According to charts I have come across, even at 126Ibs at 5'10, my bmi is only about 18.1. 18.5 is the minimum.

Unless I typed mine in wrong It told me to be in the "healthy range" on this site is 125-169lbs at 5"10 (maybe thats why it shocked me to see it saying somone that is 5"10 should be 125, if i put it in wrong.)
  • I just did it again and it says

Target weight range: 128.9 - 174.3 lbs ( I would never get down to 128.9lbs either)

BMI sucks for people with more than average lean mass. I'm qualified as overweight by BMI and athletic by body fat %. I try not to let it bother me, but it does a little... just because I wish I couldn't possibly be labeled as overweight.

While the BMI may be off, your body fat percentage is rather high for a man and also puts you in the obese range but just barely.

    Men
    Age Healthy Range Overweight Obese
    20-40 yrs 8-19% 19-25% Over 25%
    41-60 yrs 11-22% 22-27% Over 27%
    61-79 yrs 13-25% 25-30% Over 30%

Remember, obesity isn't anything more than a medical term to categorize your body mass for medical purposes. People often assign emotional value to it or try to redefine in some other way, but all it really means is your BMI exceeds a certain value. Of course, what comes with that is increased long-term health risks associated with obesity, so I think it's a good idea to try to make it a goal to get that down (especially since your body fat % is also high). If your BF were low and your BMI high, I'd say don't worry about it, but that's not the case here.

I think setting a goal to reduce your bf% would be in order.

No, you aren't. This is why I call BS on BMI; here are other factors there. BMI is just a ratio between weight and height and doesn't take into account bodyfat or muscle. I mean, if you want to get all technical and stuff 26.5% BF is teeeeechnically "overweight," but jesus- OBESE? FEH!! No way!
