My wife bought several books in the series. She has cooked many of the recipes from Cook This, Not That.
The ETNT book is very helpful when you have to eat out.0 -
I have the books, but I need to go through again..it had a lot of helpful info in them though!0

Given the situation, I always carry one of the books with me. So far I've only gotten four books from the series, but will get more when money doesn't look so funny.
They are quite helpful to me actually and I usually suggest the book to some of my customers who are looking to start diets but aren't sure what to do.0 -
I bought one on sale at the bookstore last night because I thought it looked helpful. I have just kind of skimmed through it and I like it. I was just curious what other people thought of it.0

By the title, it is a book that I would never read. I don't like people telling me what to do! Instead, I like to gain knowledge. And from my readings, as well as my personal experience, all the "don't eat this" advice is utter nonsense.0

That's exactly what it does. Teaches you a ton about nutritional information and alternatives to what you can eat while you're out. And tips and tricks for when you're in a restaurant and what to look for. This is in fact a lifestyle and with that lifestyle there are things that we won't be able to eat as often.
Another one for don't judge a book by its "title."0 -

I have read them all and found alot of helpful swaps in there. My 12 yr old son has even read them and retained some of the knowlege making wiser choices for his health. They really are worth at least a look.0

I agree with the others. It shows you how you can eat something more modified, and how to save a ton of calories, sodium, etc, not to mention money!
I also have the 'cook this not that' book. One of the recipes that my family loves is the chicken cordon bleu. I'm making it again Wednesday!0 -
They say, "Don't judge a book by its cover," and I wholeheartedly agree. However, as an avid reader, I learned at a young age that you *CAN* judge a book by it's title. Usually if it's non-fiction, and I disagree with the title, then I'm going to disagree with the book.
OK, so it tells you tips on making better choices. Now here's the crux: what does it tell you to NOT eat?
I watched my mom try every fad diet out there. Don't eat fat. Don't eat carbs. Don't eat sugar. Moderation is the only diet she has never tried. I am learning to make better choice by watching my macros each day. If it is something I like eating, then I will eat it.
And as for the burger comment, it is rare than any restaurant makes a burger that tastes like a homemade on on the grill. I would never order a burger unless that's all they sold. Give me chicken or fish, or Arby's roast beef! The one restaurant burger that I actually like is Dairy Queen's mushroom and swiss burger. (700 calories of yum!) But if I pick the mushroom and swiss, then there is absolutely no room for a Peanut Buster Parfait too, so I go for the grilled chicken. :smokin:
Basically, I gained all this weight from eating too much food and then sitting around on my *kitten* all day and all evening. So now, I still eat the things I like, get more protein and vitamins and minerals that I ever have, Now I get up and do some push-ups and I run. And the fat is melting away because I am at a calorie deficit of about 500-700 per day.
Anyway, I don't like the title. Sorry to poop on your thread with my bull-headed rebelliousness. :flowerforyou:0 -
Bought and read 3 of them (amazon- used, cheap). I like the point they are trying to make, and they have made me look back at some nutrition labels.
Their point though, often, is how to pick the lesser of 2 evils- SO ... I wouldnt call it a diet or even good advice as far as what to choose to eat. When out to eat- they can help perhaps, if you're at some crappy chain with almost no healthy choices. But if you are cooking for yourself- Id suggest researching nutrition elsewhere.0
