Any cold weather bikers out there?

I'm just looking for some referrals on a good pair of cycling pants. I can't seem to find anything here locally, although I stll have a few custom shops to check out. I tried a pair of Nikishi pants and there was nowhere near enough padding in them. I typically need a LOT of padding to be comfortable on long rides.
Anybody know of a brand that has worked well for them?........and/or any creative ideas on outer layers to wear over cycling shorts in lieu of pants??????

I have a pair of Craft Thermal Windstopper tights that are freaking awesome and just wear whatever shorts under them (2XU, TYR, Ibex, Craft generally).
I also wear them for other winter activities... running, skiing, snowblowing... they get a TON of use.
On a side note, if you are talking about road riding (higher speeds, more open terrain), be sure to think about the wind, not just the temp. If you are talking about mtn biking, wind is less of a concern.

I use cold weather running tights. Usually has bits of reflective on it to help with darker nights. Gore, Nike, Odlo are the ones I use but I swear by Gore. They are a bit pricey but worth it for wet wintery days.0

I heat up fast when cycling, so layers are the way I go. I use my standard Pearl Izumi Elite cycling shorts and add knee warmers as it cools off, then go to tights over my PI's, and that usually gets me through the winter. Since I also run and hike I have tightly cut running pants I could throw over the tights and beyond that I have close cut fleece hiking pants, but I have never had to use them cycling. I do similar up top, mixing up short sleeve jersey's and a cycling vest with arm warmers that I can peel off when I heat up, then going to long sleeve jersey's with the vest, then adding base layers as needed (not much for me) and using a cycling jacket. I also use toe covers for my shoes and a helmet liner to keep my ears and head warm. And thermal gloves of course, as my fingers tend to really freeze. With this variety I can ride in about any weather. Most of my stuff is windstopper since cycling generates so much wind. My face and nose get cold but I'd rather be a little cold as to be smothered by the balaclava type stuff. My internal temp seems to run hotter than most folk so I usually have less clothing on than most other riders I see, but layering works for anyone.0
