...you really want to excerise but can't because of injury? I work out 6 days a week - 3 lifting and 3 running. Sunday is my "long run" day... typically 6+ miles. I just became a true runner this summer but am still a beginner. Lots to learn. Anyway, I've got plantar fasciitis and recently got blessed with achilles tendonitis in my left ankle. Therefore I was only able to run 1.5 miles yesterday with pain in every step. It's frustrating because I know how many years I sat on the couch growing larger and larger, and how many of my peers could give a crap about getting out and getting a big workout in. The difference is that I do care and I do want to get a big workout in. It sucks when you want to workout but your body doesn't let you. Before anyone gives suggestions about getting new shoes or using an elliptical let me just say that I have several pairs of "real" running shoes that are not worn out that I bought at my specialty running shop and that the elliptical is nothing like real running. I also wear superfeet insoles.
I'll continue lifting weights this week and hopefully be the weekend I can get out and run again. Thinking about bracing the achillies and giving it a shot. Anyone tried this?

well, due to a labral tear in my hip, I have had to limit/change what I do. Right now, I'm not supposed to run. BUT, I didn't let that get me down. I am a cyclist and running was my crosstrain. So now, I do some rowing at the gym, I picked up boxing again. (real boxing), and added lifting.
You will continue to be bummed unless you do something about it. Running is not all there is. You just have to be willing to try other things.0 -
Same here. Siatica is slowing me down. I feel like I need a t-shirt that reads "I CAN run faster but my butt hurts!"0

Im not injured iv just crap trainers that take the heels off me! geting a pair of proper running shoes for my bday so will have to hold out till then :P0

you have my deepest sympathy..I have been unable to run for almost 6 weeks after a knee inhury and was up at half marathon/13.1 mile distance...I am realising all my training has gone down the tubes and I will have to start all over again....All I can say is hang in there and stay focused.

Hurts to live... right here!!! I effed up my neck due to a new workout regime... Too many tension-inducing movements, not enough warm up!! I've been eating codeine like it's candy for 5 days now, and not seeing any end in sight.
I acted out in a very bad way over the weekend (pity-party sort of situation), but now I'm back to eating light cottage cheese and logging it in MFP. Intense bursts of physical activity are still off in the distance, but at least I'm back in low-cal rehab0 -
I do not understand, why do you have to run?
I have never been able to run, I always feel down.

Find an ART practitioner. Mine has worked miracles for me on both PF and ITBS.

I severed my achilles tendon once and was inactive for a year. You need to let it heal guy.0

I hear ya. I messed up my knees trying to start C2K before I was ready. Took a while to be able to walk normal If I'd had access to a pool, I might have done something there in the mean time, but I ended up just trying to heal before getting back to exercise. I also did a lot of reading to try to understand what went wrong, so I didn't do it again, LOL!

I can understand that.
I am a runner. I run lots. I have run lots of marathons and other races. It's part of my identity. I go out with a running club. It helps me deal with stress, weight control, happiness, everything!
I had a stress fracture in February and couldn't run till the end of May. It was tough. But I ate less to make sure I didn't put weight on. And I lifted weights when I could (although it was difficult as I couldn't squat at all in my Aircast boot)
But this weekend I am racing my longest race. A 50km ultra marathon in London. So onwards and upwards:drinker:0 -
I had to stop running due to leg injuries. I'm also recovering from major surgery and have Fybromyalgia... Trust me when I say I feel your pain. Running made me feel alive! Really miss it! Things will get better, just break in easily.
As hard as it is, lay of the running for a good month, knowing that you'll come back stronger. Try spinning. Gives you the same endorphins buzz as running!

PF sucks, seriously - My best friend is recovering from it now - But if you've lived through PF, you also know that it takes at least a few weeks to recover from. Running in spite of an injury is only going to result in a worse injury. You need to be honest with yourself here... If you aren't ready to be back on the pavement, then you have absolutely nothing to gain from getting back out there.
Yeah it's frustrating as hell though. When I sprained my ankle I just wanted to run on my hands
In the meantime I'd be doing research into running technique and perhaps get a shoe fitting. Good technique and proper shoes are the best ways you can prevent PF again, and unfortunately once you've had PF, it tends to pop up again.0 -

I have had all sorts of health problems and three surgeries in a year. Losing weight has alleviated quite a few. I also have started seeing a chiropractor who deals with sports injuries in addition t a podiatrist and an orthopedic surgeon.
When it comes to exercise, strength training (not body building) is essential. While you are down with one thing, you have to work some of the others. It doesn't matter whether its running, cycling or rock climbing, you need core strength.
When I couldn't run (knee surgery), I worked the upper body for cardio on machines at the gym. I had shoulder surgery a few months ago, and I run, I run a lot 100 miles a month.

It does suck - but you could walk if you can without pain. I am a recent runner (2 months now) and like everything else, once I commit I am kind of a crazy...
So I ran 32.1 miles my first month and 68.9 miles my second month...and developed runner's knee! Damn knee pain - I spend a lot of time caring for my knee - Ice, ibuprofin, keep it up - but I also continue to run as long as my knee allows me. It has slowed me down and kept me at shorter distance and sometimes I just walk if that is all I can do without pain (and it is strange - it isn't really pain, but stiffness and swelling). I have also been strengh building the muscles in my thighs to help combat the cause of the runner's knee. Hopefully, as long as I am careful, I can continue along this path while improving my knee (instead of making it worse). I guess it is all trial and error for me since I have NEVER been athletic before.
Early in my first month I twisted an ankle and it kept me off my feet for over a week...sometimes you just need to stop until you heal. I guess just listen to your body when you are trying to substitute for your running.0 -

I would love to run but my shins hurt too much... I would like to start out slow but I have no patience for it. I circuit train instead as it gets my strength and cardio in at the same time.
I can relate to your frustration though. Two years ago, I had a deep hip muscle injury and for about 6 months, I had to do physio and was stuck on the elliptical. I know the ellipitcal is nothing like running but I set the machine to pre-set interval workouts which made it less boring for me and was quite intense especially if you upped the level of tension.
Hang in there! Better to rest and heal than to cause further injury where you will be stuck even longer without exercise.0 -
I've been on the couch since 27 Aug with a broken foot... and now I apparently have vascular issues and nerve issues (told them about the nerve issues at the time of original injury... but they were just like "oh this is your first broken bone and you don't know how bad it hurts")
I am totally non weight bearing on my right foot which means I can't even drive (because there are laws... and if I get pulled over for ANYTHING I can get a ticket for driving with my left foot... so... I am STUCK at home!!!
I have been working on my pushups... and doing small stretches... I had 167 miles in august... and ZERO in sept...
so yes it does suck... but you find something else to do... and keep up with the nutrition portion0
