Working out pre-work - am I backwards?

I went to the gym this morning - first time working out in about a month. I did 30 minutes on the elliptical and then did some squats in the squat rack with a bare bar and two or three different weight sets on machines as well. I stopped because I had to get in the shower to go to work - not because I couldn't do any more (gotta try harder next time).

However, now I'm about to fall asleep at my desk. I ate an english muffin with pb before working out and I had some gatorade as I was putting on make up and what not in the locker room but I literally almost dozed off 5 minutes ago.

Everyone in the office is telling me working out in the morning is supposed to rev me up for the day and what not, but I'm struggling to steer clear of coffee this morning (trying to cut it out because I like it sugary/creamy) and I'm yawning like a crazy person.

Am I just backwards? Do the rest of you get a burst of energy from working out in the morning? If I'm not backwards...how do you stay up at work?

I'd suggest a protein shake after your work out. If you didn't get that "boost" afterwards, your body might not have enough fuel to burn. I usually get a huge surge for a few hours after I work out in the morning, or when I have my crossfit at 8pm, it always takes me a few hours to get tired for bed. When i work out in the morning, I have breakfast(banana and cereal) before the gym, then a protein shake(I like the Gold Standard Whey Protein) afterwards.

If you aren't used to getting up early, it's going to take a little time to get used to that. And if you just cut out coffee today, that's going to have an effect on you too. Caffiene is pretty powerful, and going cold turkey on it will give you a few days of headaches and fatigue.

I like early morning workouts, and when I do them, I have more energy for the day. But it took me a week or so to get to that point.

Working out in the morning definately helps wake me up... Get more sleep the night before... If you are sleep deprived for too long it will take its toll on your body

That's the only workout I know - before work, usually predawn! You could also try a little chocolate milk after your workout. I'm usually pumped for the day - well most of it anyway. Getting up at 4:30 every day eventually wears on me!!

After a hard workout, your body needs to be refueled. Have a snack.

Also, give yourself time to get used to this routine. Yes, you will be fatigued after that workout. But after a week or so you'll adjust to get more sleep (going to bed earlier) so you won't be as fatigued after.

    Thanks!

I actually am a HUGE sleeper - we normally get in bed around 9 and fall asleep by 9:30 and I woke up at 6:15 (instead of my usual 6:45 - 7) so I should have had enough sleep, but I'll try to get in bed a touch earlier on nights I plan to work out the next day.

I just grabbed a snack too (apple) so hopefully that helps a bit.

Glad to hear I'm not completely backwards! Just gotta get used to it, I guess :)
  • Are you drinking any recovery drinks? What about vitamins? Super-B Complex is GREAT for an energy booster. Protein is important after a workout. CARBS is extremely important to fuel a workout, as well. You gotta get your body refueled within that one-hour window after working out, but preferably within 30 minutes.
