Thoughts on calculation of daily calorie target for weightlo

Then depending on lifestyle (sedentary would be 20-40%, moderately active would be 40-60% and very active is 60-80%) and this is before your workouts.
Multiply your 1st calculation with the percentage to get your daily calorie requirement.
Then I had read to deduct 500 calories a day to lose 1 lb. a week.

So for me? 266 lbs. x 10 = 2660. 2660 x .20 = 3192. So take 1000 from that to lose 2 lbs. a week and that puts me at eating 2192 calories.

With that, it gives me a high number that I'm just not trusting. I mean, I do have a lot to lose and maybe I've been under eating but just not sure! I mean, does it really come to mathematics? I know that the kind of calories I eat are very important as well - I've started the P90X and am in day 5 going strong!!!

    I am not sure where you got that calculation, but I weigh more than you (275) and MFP says for me to lose 1.5 pounds a week, I need to eat 1660 calories a day, so I'm sticking with that because it is working! If I went by the formula you provided, yeah that would be way too many calories!

    I think maybe I missed a step as your mathematics don't multiple out correctly?

    2660 x 1.20 = 3192

    Where'd the formula come from anyway, it doesn't seem right to me?

    Here is the formula that I found using the BMR and Harris Benedict equation for finding the minimum calories expended per day (in pounds):

    (655 + ( 4.35 x weight in pounds ) + ( 4.7 x height in inches ) - ( 4.7 x age in years )) x 1.2 = calories needed per day


    Based on the info in your profile, here is how yours would look:

    (655 + ( 4.35 x 266) + (4.7 x height) - (4.7 x 35)) x 1.2

    (655 + (1157.1) + (4.7 x height) - (164.5)) x 1.2


    Unfortunately, I do not know your height, so you will have to plug it in to get your calories:

    (1647.6 + (4.7 x height in inches)) x 1.2 = calories needed per day


    Now that we know how many calories we use in a day, we need to calculate the calorie deficit needed to lose weight.

    1 pound = 3500 calories deficit, so 2 pounds would be a 7000 calorie deficit (3500 x 2). Over 7 days, you would need a 1000 calorie deficit per day to lose 2 pounds per week (7000 calories / 7 days in a week).

    So, you would subtract 1000 from your calories needed per day to calculate the daily calorie target to lose 2 pounds per week.



    Since I do not know your height, let me show you an example of how to compute it for yourself:


    Let's say that you are 5 foot 5 (65 inches):


    daily calories needed - calorie deficit = calorie target per day

    ((1647.6 + (4.7 x height in inches)) x 1.2) - 1000 calorie deficit = calorie target per day

    ((1647.6 + (4.7 x 65)) x 1.2) - 1000

    ((1647.6 + 305.5) x 1.2) - 1000

    (1953.1 x 1.2) - 1000

    (2343) - 1000 = 1343 calories per day to lose 2 pounds per week.

    * If your calorie deficit is under 1200 calories per day, please use the standard 1200 calories per day to avoid starvation mode. If you are not very tall, the 1200 calorie recommendation may not apply, in which you will want to consult a dietitian.

    Sorry I didn't put in here what the actual calculations meant. I got the information from P90X and also from my MIO Motiva, which is strapless heart rate watch that can also keep track of calories, etc. I THOUGHT it was way too high!!!!!!

    If I did the calculation right with my weight of 266 and height of 64 inches & age of 36 (in 2 days!):

    655 + (4.35 x 266) + (4.7 x 64) - (4.7 x 36) x 1.2 = 2332.44 - 1000 = 1332 calories per day
