Technical Help!
I’m using Windows 7 at work. I had a simple Explorer screen open this morning dragging files from one folder on my personal network drive to another folder. Just organizing *kitten*. No big deal…

Then everything I dragged (~20 files & 2 folders) vanished. As soon as I let up my mouse button they were gone. I noted the name of some of the files. I have searched my C: Drive, and both network drives I have access to… nothing. My trash is also mysteriously empty even though I did not empty it…

Out external IT company has 48 hours to respond…. Does anyone have ANY advice? Other than leave and get a few Guinness at the local pub?

When browsing back, this was the error (if it's legible...)

Yikes that sounds awful. I am not a computer whiz so I can't really offer any advice other than searching your drives (which you've already done). I hope you find your files.

    You COULD try a restore.

were you holding down the shift key?

I don't mean to scare you but if you were holding down the shift key while moving something to Recycle bin, then it's possible that you permanently deleted the file.

Can't really read the error properly but basically it's saying that you can't access the location that the files are in.

I see it is your H:/ drive which my be a network drive. Perhaps the network has gone down? Sometimes there can be an error where you lose connection to that drive. If it is a computer error then you need to remap it which means to tell your computer that the H:/ drive refers to a specific network location. On my network we have logon scripts that run which, amongst other things, map the users' network drives.

Go to 'My Computer' and see if you can see H:/ drive. Does it exist? If so does it have a red 'X' on it? In either case you could try logging off and back on as a first try in case you have logon scripts or it is simply a computer error. Next perhaps restart.

If that doesn't fix it then your IT department need to look at it.

Check other things that rely on the network though such as internet and emails and see if you have any other network drives.

If you don't have network, is H:/ drive assigned to an external hard drive you have plugged in? Has that become disconnected or somehow broken? Is it assigned to a secondary internal hard drive? Has that developed a fault or become disconnected?

Basically though - you have H:/ drive which was available but is no longer for some reason. You need to find out what H:/ drive was and why it is no longer.

do a search if you remember the name of the files you were moving.

Our IT department will recover items. HOpefully yours can too.

Thanks everyone!!! IT ended up calling and they can't figure out where the files vanished to either, so they're going to restore last night's backup of my H: Drive!

Only I can be dumb enough to lose files when dragging and dropping them. Seriously.

Out of interest - is your H:/ drive a network drive?
