Very low mood :-(

hi folks,

I've generally been doing well. I'm almost at my first target, I've had to buy new clothes because I've dropped 2 dress sizes and I'm getting a lot of compliments on my weight loss. Recently though my mood has been really low. I feel hungry no matter what I've eaten, I feel tired all the time no matter how much sleep I get, I'm not enjoying the gym as much as I used to and I just generally feel frustrated and fed up with this whole lifestyle. I obviously don't want to go back to what I was like before but I do not feel motivated in the slightest. Very tearful and over emotional and feel like an idiot! Any advice? I know I just need to man up and realise losing weight isn't a walk in the park but I am seriously struggling.

If you are seriously hiungry, tired, moody and everything you just said, it sounds to me like you are not eating enough. If you are as close to your goal weight as your ticker reflects, you should be eating at 10% less than your maintenance calories, PLUS all your exercise calories. You can't afford to cut calories at this point, your body has no backup plan.

losing weight is hard...maintaining is even harder...maybe you need cheat meals or days...maybe set certain days as rest days. Good luck

You may not be eating enough food or the right type of food. Serotonin levels are tied to carbs. Several people don't do well on a low carb diet (don't know if you are on one) because it messes with their serotonin and causes feelings of blah mood. However, obese carboholics also have issues with serotonin but that's another discussion.

Food and mood are closely connected so make sure diet is not too low in calories, healthy fats, carbs if you are feeling emotional shifts that are uncommon to you.

Exercise and sunlight may help you feel better. Get tested for vitamin D levels. Anything below 50 needs to be bumped up (generally speaking).

Weight loss is not always accompanied by happiness, energy., feel-good moods. Your body is going through change, the same way it went through a change when you put on weight.

In reality, although you say you have 1 pound to go, you are at Goal! Congratulations! You have done very, very well.

I'm not 100% certain what to advise. Sometimes when you set out on this weight loss venture, you think your life will change dramatically when you reach your goal weight. Unfortunately, I have not found that to be the case.

You are much slimmer, hopefully much more active, in better physical shape than you've been in awhile... but that's about it. You still probably have many of the same "problems and concerns" that you had before you started dieting.

I would recommend a follow up visit with your doctor. Perhaps you are deficient in one or more vitamins. Vitamin D is one that lifts your mood, and you may, in fact, be deficient in that one.

I wish you all of the best. Wish I had an answer, but, unfortunately I don't. Maybe someone else can offer better insight.

I didn't see your workout log or food journal but are you possibly over training? I know that burning out on training can cause all of the symptoms you mentioned - not enjoying your workouts, interrupted sleep patterns or lethargy during the day, depressed mood etc. Take a little time off from working out and counting the calories. It might just be the break you need to get you motivated again.

Otherwise, I say talk to your doctor. Those could also be signs of a thyroid issue or depression (or both). I hope you feel better very soon

Try exercising a bit more, so you can have more to eat. It gets a little depressing to think you have to spend the rest of your life, deprived of the foods that you love.

I agree with this. It sounds to me like you should try adjusting your daily goals and eating a bit more.

You have accomplished something INCREDIBLE, but if you can't feel excellent about that because you're tired and hungry, you gotta fix that! You should be dancing in the streets, so get yourself some healthy snacks and see if you can't kick those blues!

Last night I was in this exact same predicament, except I have not even made as much progress as you! I came home and just cried because I haven't been losing weight, I actually gained. I had a good cry and let it all out, talked to a friend about it, then decided that being upset about it doesn't help anything. You need to be happy with yourself and love who you are, no matter what your weight is. When you focus on that instead of how much the scale says and the exact food you're eating, you'll feel much better. All I've been focusing on lately is my weight and calories in vs calories out, exercise, etc. I had to take a step back last night and actually look at myself as a person and think about all of the qualities I possess that have nothing to do with how my body looks. There's so much more to a person than their weight! We just have to remind ourselves of that sometimes. I suggest talking about it with a friend and take a night off of exercise to just relax and let your mind and body have a break. Sometimes if you push yourself too hard you break down and that's when the psychological stuff starts to happen.
  • Thanks everybody for your comments :-) I'm always amazed that people take the time to reply it means a lot! I usually have a cheat meal on a friday night with my hubby so I started thinking about what I'm going to have and that cheered me up a bit. Headaches are still pretty bad and I'm still feeling pretty emotional. Heading back to the gym tomorrow and if I'm not feeling better after a week of eating more I'll maybe head to the doctor.
