Dance class question?

Options
So I'm starting my dance classes this week. The class is an hour and a half. There is some standing around and not continuous cardio. Is approx. 40 min of dance/aerobic activity a good estimate?

How do the rest of the MFP dancers count it?

TIA,
M

For me it depends on the class. For my social dance classes I count about half the time, because we spend a lot of time talking and not dancing. For some of my solo dance classes I count it at about 2/3rds, since we spend some time stretching and warming up, but less time talking.

I tend to count different times for every class though, since the amount of time spent dancing, even in the same class, tends to vary. One week I might record 40 minutes for an hour class and other weeks I'll put it as 20 minutes.

    Have fun dancing!

Per my Zumba instructor we burn 1000 calories for an hour workout. Love dancing into shape!

I would be careful using a predetermined number. There is absolutely no way the burn is the same for every participant. Your age, height, weight, fitness level and body fat percentage can make it vary greatly. Yours may be higher or significantly lower.

My Zumba burn never exceeded 500 calories in an hour based on my heart rate monitor.

edit: OP best guess is as good as youre going to get using the MFP exercise guide. Invest in a heart rate monitor for a more accurate picture of your individual burn.

For a 1 hour dance class I record 45 minutes to allow for brief breaks between dances. For a Saturday social dance I record half the time we are there as actual activity.

    Keeeeeep dancing ;-)
