I've had this sharp pain in my ribs (on my right side) for the whole day. It hurts to laugh or take deep breaths. I think I've experienced it before but can't recall how it went away. It's really painful...Advice?

    Yep...

    Go to the doctor.

Chances are it's nothing. But its worth checking out. I was having some really severe side pains for several days and eventually went...turned out I was full of crap. Literally.

a week later (after a thorough...ehm...treatment process) I ended up in the ER because they were worse than ever.

Found out that my bowel is sort of twisted....or unnaturally routed through my body which causes pain and discomfort. Nothing to worry about...just annoying. Still glad I went. (to the doc that is....)

Maybe gallbladder?? The first time I had this pain it wasn't too bad and I ignored it. The second time it came back it was the worst pain ever, I couldn't sit, breathe or do anything. In the end I had an operation because I had gall stones and they had to remove my gallbladder. I hope its not a gallbladder in your case.

Edited..I forgot to say go see a doctor. Do not ignore it.

oh wow! i hope its not serious! i never considered going to the doctor... maybe i should. the only thing ive been doing differently is some ab exercises and if i was leaning too far backwards maybe something popped? if that even makes sense?

Could be a pulled muscle. If it still hurts in a day or 2, you should go see your doctor.

I had that very thing and turns out i pulled a muscle inbetween my ribs...I had been sick and coughing a LOT! I also re-injured it when i was working out a lot. Take some Motrin and tylenol...If it keeps hurting after a couple days go see a doc!

!!!!!!**HOWEVER, if the pain is radiating down your arms or it feels like an elephant is sittin on your chest go to the ER...****

It sounds like you might have a rib out of place? This happenes to me a few times a year,I wake up like this not able to breath with sharp pain in my chest. It can last for days! The last time I thought I was having a heart attack! I saw a chiropracter and feel better right away after the first visit but it usually takes 2 to go away completley. The last time it happened it was a weekend and he was closed,I googled rib out of place and the advice was heating pad and rolling on the floor holding legs tight to chest roll  all the way back to your neck until you can hear your ribs pop.It worked for me you could try it:)

realistically, you've probably just pulled an intercostal (between your ribs) muscle or something.

but, as others have detailed, there are a selection of more serious issues that could cause the pain you're describing, and your doctor is the best person to investigate them. given the right side, tucked under your ribs is where your liver calls home, it's worth a check-up. my differential diagnosis is gall stones,

i've had a collapsed lung. believe me, you'd know all about it if that was the problem.
