I am thinking about using this to supplement my training. I currently do resistance training 3 days a week and HIIT one day a week. I currently use BCAAs, whey protein, Creatine and a multivitamin.
When I used to take carnitene, taurene and something else.
Anyone use it that could tell me pros/cons etc?
*edit* argenine was the other thing I used.

I haven't come across any solid evidence supporting its weight loss claims, but I've read about its other benefits regarding Alzheimer's and thyroid issues. A healthy person will make adequate carnitine in their body.

I am in graduate school studying biochemistry. Carnitine (L-carnitine) is naturally found in the body. Among other things, it is greatly involved in fatty acid metabolism. It won't hurt to take it and it should help your body start to metabolize fat stores. (Just read it and take on an empty stomach as it says) Good luck!

Won't make a difference in weight loss. Acetyl L-Carnitine + Alpha Lipoic Acid makes a great antioxidant stack though (they have a synergistic effect with one another).

So ALCAR+ALA is only good for antioxidant? Sounds like an expensive antioxidant stack. Why not just run vitamin C and E?

I took some daily for the 1st 6 months of my weight loss. 60lbs later.....well you decide.... did it work?
  • [Gnc - L-Carnitine 500, 1 Capsules] I'm taking one everyday in the morning since 50+ days ago. I've been consistent with my diet/ training and i'm increasing my lean body mass and hydration level; these means I'm burning fat like crazy. Totally worth it.

What do you think it does?

    L-Carnitine
Carnitine serves as an important transporter of fatty acids from the cytosol into the mitochondria of the cell [374]. Increased cellular levels of carnitine would theoretically enhance transport of fats into the mitochondria and thus provide more substrates for fat metabolism. L-carnitine has been one of the most common nutrients found in various weight loss supplements. Over the years, a number of studies have been conducted on the effects of L-carnitine supplementation on fat metabolism, exercise capacity and body composition. The overwhelming conclusions of L-carnitine research indicates that L-carnitine supplementation does not affect muscle carnitine content [375], fat metabolism, aerobic- or anaerobic-exercise performance [375], and/or weight loss in overweight or trained subjects [376,377]. Despite the fact that L-carnitine has been shown apparently ineffective as a supplement, the research on L-carnitine has shifted to another category revolving around hypoxic stress and oxidative stress. Preliminary research has reported that L-carnitine supplementation has a minimal effect on reducing the biomarkers of exercise-induced oxidative stress [378]. While these findings are not promising, there is some recent data indicating that L-carnitine tartrate supplementation during intensified periods of training may help athletes tolerate training to a greater degree [379]. Consequently, there may be other advantages to L-carnitine supplementation than promoting fat metabolism.

Here's a table of supplements and their apparent effectiveness.

Notice l-carnitine is at the bottom, in the doesn't do a thing pile.

I lost 60 pounds over 5 months without taking it, so ill say no, it didn't work. Everything else you did caused you to lose weight. L-Carnitine has been shown to not do much of anything, as Ironsmasher already pointed out. Your body makes all the l-Carnitine it needs, ingesting more generally just gets broken down and eliminated.

L-carnitine is also good for your heart. It occurs naturally in the body, so it is very safe to take, so long as you stick to the recommended doses. Taurine is also very safe to take and is also good for your heart.

Additionally, I think they have potential to improve the intensity of your workouts, when taken correctly. Like the biochemistry student said, be sure to take them on an empty stomach.

I read this as well. So while they may not have a direct benefit as a fat burner, they are beneficial to your heart and also can increase workout performance, which ultimately will help with fat burning.
Here is a website I found that has a list of the top natural fat fighting supplement combos:

Some of this stuff is really surprising! Like I said, I currently take BCAAs, whey protein, creatine and a multi-vitamin.

Always take supp recommendations from a media outlet that makes it's money from supplement ads with a grain of salt. There is a clear lack of evidence L Carnitine supplementation does anything for body comp purposes

ALCAR+ALA is >100x as effective (it is potent enough that 500mg ALCAR+200mg ALA virtually stop cellular aging due to oxidative stress). The stack is dirt cheap if you buy in bulk (costs me less than $30 per year using bulk powder and making my own pills for 2 people). You can get 500g of ALCAR for like $13, and ALA isn't much more expensive.

Edit: which isn't to say you shouldn't take a good multi and get plenty of C and E

Geonova Na-R-ALA > ALA, but it's much more expensive

I take L Carnitine every day. Whilst the weight loss side might still be up in the air, there are other benefits to it already mentioned.
  • I am taking L-Carnitine twice a day and I am happy with the results.

    HTH.

Unless you are pregnant, nursing, or have some over-riding medical condition, it's a very safe supplement. For some people, it gives them energy. (which is why it is one of the most common ingredients in energy pills/drinks)
