Fitting in a workout as a working professional.

Hello All,
My name is Alicia and I am currently trying to get BACK into shape.
It was so much easier when I was in college!
I have been struggling to get back into shape since starting my full time, professional job after college. I work in Los Angeles/Hollywood, so I dead with heavy traffic every day. I leave for work at 845am and do not get home until around 7:30. I have been having a lot of trouble finding a good workout routine.
I have a gym membership, but am also open to other avenues of fitness.
Anyone have any ideas/suggestions? I want to pick your brains!

Get a new job, those hours suck!
If you're pushed for time, you'll want max impact/calorie burn in minimal time... 30 day shred or insanity before leaving for work maybe?1 -
I have to be at work around 8. I get up at 4:15 am and I do my workout then. I feel so much better exercising before I go to work.4

Kettlebells will provide you with both cardio and strength. Look into Tracy Reifking - she has awesome videos on youtube. Also her book The Swing is perfect for an absolute beginner. She also has an awesome blog.
Just FYI - I use a 12kg (26lb) bell and burn ~400 cal in 30 min!3 -
I also work long hours at a professional job, so while I don't have the commute you do, I have a similar time crunch. Working out at lunch isn't an option, so I work out in the early morning. I take a 5:30 AM boot camp class and it works great. I am done with class and back at home by 6:45 and can get on with my day. It's the only time that's viable for me.1

if you are starting out, you have a lot of time in the morning to do the 30 DS. start at 7 am done by 7:30 ..get ready for work...do it!0

Working professional here, also currently in school to further my education. I exercise early in the a.m before work. Some nights I dont get home until 9p.m. I either walk in my neighborhood or do workout DVDs that I get from the library. My workouts vary in length some days they are 20 mins, sometimes 45 minutes. I ususally hit the gym on the weekends. It is doable. You have to get creative with it. Best of Luck to you! :flowerforyou:0

What time does your gym open? I'm at the office by 7:15am and some nights I don't leave until 8pm. I'm up at 4am and working out by 4:30 because working out after work wasn't productive for me. Maybe try mornings.1
-
You're not leaving until 8:45 you have plenty of time for something. If there's a gym close to the office join it. Leave for the gym with your work clothes and everything else you need hit the gym and go to work from there. I have to leave for work at 7:30am and I'm up and on my way to the gym by 4am, come home shower, get dressed, get food, and go.
If you want it bad enough you'll find time for it.1 -
You have to find what works for you, Mornings, Evenings, or maybe a lunch break. I am not a morning person I have tried and failed many times. Evenings work best for. An hour after dinner. If your press for time do a short work out like 30 day Shred or 30 min brisk walk. Strength train on weekends0
-
I work 24/48's so I feel your pain! I wake up at 0500 on my work days to get in a 30 Day Shred workout DVD and do some cardio before I have to be at work at 0800. If I want to workout everyday, I have to do that before I leave since I won't be home till after 0900 the next morning.0

Most efficient way is for you to be active at work. Get up and walk around, carry awkward or heavy objects around. Do posture exercises, walk up the stairs in your building.0

I hate to tell you, but it's easier now than it will be later. My paid job is only about 20 hours a week, but my real job is 24/7: 4 kids.1

I have a desk job too, and found it really easy to let my fitness slide - then the eating habits etc.
I made myself get up early in the mornings and get to the gym by 6am. This gave me time to get back home and help get the kids ready before heading off to work (which is about 11hrs including commute time).
I am lucky enough to have a job now where I can schedule my time and work quite autonomously, so I go during lunch time. My gym is almost next door to the office so I can be out and back in under an hour.
This is an area of real interest to me, and I have seen some good results from executive coaching that have embraced physical well-being as well as professional upskilling. Taking an hour out (or even half an hour) during the day if you can, even if it is just for a walk, will most likely increase productivity and energy levels for the remainder of the day.
It's hard, but once again it is about setting priorities, and being strong. If you want some reference material to show your boss let me know.0 -
I agree with the other posted, you have PLENTY of time in the morning if you don't have to be at work until 8:45. Then you won't have to worry about working out all day, you've already met your goal.0

I'll see your hours and raise you. I leave for work at 5 and get home by 7. Sometimes it's 5 am to 7 pm, and sometimes 5 pm to 7 am. I just finished my MBA while working those hours. I am a married father of 3 with a dog and a lawn. Life is busy.
I used this as an excuse for years. Ironically, going back to school and leading a busier life forced me to organize my day to survive. During that process I finally committed to improving my fitness. Now I workout at least 4-5 days per week. I typically hit the gym on the way home from work, because once I settle in, eat dinner, etc. the odds I'll work out become slim.
I thought it would suck working out after a 12+ hour workday, but I've found it invigorating. I keep my workouts around 45 minutes, but I make them count. Get in, bust your *kitten*, and get out and on with your day.
You can do it.1 -
Get up earlier...I work full time, have 2 kids, and am take 2 classes at my university...you have to make time - I get up at 4 a.m....you just have to want it bad enough.0
-
I more or less workout when I have time... and hired a personal trainer so I'd at least have one set workout per week.
I work 2 jobs and go to school two nights a week.. I also hate exercise DVD's, so I just do what I can and keep my calories in check.0 -
I was never into exercise. I now get up early in the moring just to get a 2 mile/30 min workout in. It is still dark outside so I have a DVD for walking with weights. It is amazing how my body has changed. I also take a walk at lunch if the weather allows and I have the opportunity to walk inside when it's too cold or rainy at work. I started with a 1 mile/15 minute walk and have worked my way up. I also bought a new bicycle last weekend and am so excited to get some good rides in before it gets too cold. Good luck!!0

I am up at 4:30 and working out at 5am. At work by 8. I have a desk job, professional, although I'm not sure what tat has to do with anything. You have to commit. Someone else mentioned kids, yes. It gets worse later. You have to commit and never waiver. It's not easy. If it was, everyone would be fit.0

I'm having the same problem. I work 7pm til 7:30 am, usually 3 days at a time. I get home go to bed, get up 8 hrs later then get ready to go to work. On my days off it's not a problem. I try doing some activity at work every night. Any ideas would be appreciated.0

Graveyard shift is tough to manage. There's always right after work or right when you wake up.0 -

I am also a professional working in a large city plus I have a 6 month year old whom I have to drop off at daycare before Starbucks then work. But with that being said, I don't think the fact that we are professionals have anything to do with "LIFE". We could be at home, in the country and there will always be something! My solution=get up earlier or be prepared to stay up late. Even consider your lunch hour if the gym has a shower. I get up 5 AM 2-3 times a week to do a Jillian DVD (which is a helluva work-out for 30 min). The rest of the week is filled with group exercise classes like spinning or Pilates which I wake up at 4:30 AM and commute to get there. You just have to find a way BOO. Good Luck!1 -

I go late at night 8:30 or 9:00 pm. When the kids were little it was after they were in bed, now they put themselves to bed by the time I get back. I'm much better at night, even after a full days work, than I am in the morning.0

Pretty much everyone on this site has time constraints, obligations, family to take care of, work to do, etc. So, it's just a matter of deciding how important exercise is to you. If it's important, you will find the time. If it's not, you won't.
Sometimes, I have to get up at 4:30am to get my workout in before my daughter wakes up and I have to get both of us ready for the day so I can be at work on time. Sometimes, I squeeze in a workout after work and other activities (hoping to go for a run around 8pm tonight after her soccer game).
You can find the time if you really want to.1 -
I get up at or before 6 am to squeeze in a work out before the kids wake up, and I go to work at either 7:30 or 8:30 am depending on the day. Evenings are out because of the dinner and going to bed routines. What I love dong are the Firm Express videos (20 min but intense) or Jillian Michaels Ripped in 30 (33 min). I also run on the weekends.
As others have said it is all about making a commitment and it only gets harder as your life gets fuller. That is why I love the success stores. I love proof of just how successful people are.0 -

Yup. I'm up at 3:45 am to workout, at work by 7:30 am. I work full time, have an internship for my Master's part time, have a 2-year-old son, and am communications chair for a museum. Oh, and I'm training for a half marathon. You can't just find time, you have to make time.2 -
Could you possibly get a piece of cardio equipment at your place so you don't have to travel to a gym? That would save you time, too. I hate having to rush around to workout. Having some gym equipment at the house is a real time saver. I'm also more of a night person, so working out in the am is NOT my thing. I'd rather exercise at 10 at night.0
-
I wish I had as much time as you do in the morning! I have to be out of the house by 6:50am and I get home around 6:30-7. I've tried waking up at 5 and working out before work but with insomnia, I just wasn't functioning at work. I work out as soon as I get home and eat a late dinner with the bf. I have fun on the weekends! haha0
