Massive fail :(

I went out for dinner last night and skipped training....resulting in me being over my daily calories by over 800! So annoyed at myself now, but at the same time it was nice to have a break! I have only been on the Insanity program for 2 weeks, but it eats up all my free time in the evenings. Even though I ruined my whole day yesterday...I can't decide whether it was worth it. Probably not.

Don't beat yourself up over it. It happens. I went with my one friend to Cheesecake Factory and ended up eating over 1,100 calories there one day and actually LOST weight the next day. Setbacks happen. It's working hard every day and not giving up after they happen. Just pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and continue. And congrats on the Insanity program....2 weeks is awesome! You're doing great!0

That was yesterday, hopefully you made better choices today and great choices tomorrow.
When you choose to eat off your plan, make sure the food is good tasting and worth it. Enjoy it and get over it, don't use it as a tool to beat yourself.0 -
Hey. One day, however off, is not a massive fail.. unless you keep telling yourself so.
That was yesterday. Push on.0 -
Thanks guys! It helps to have ppl put it into perspective! :happy:0

@Alpona483 Wise words! You cannot do anything about yesterday that is gone and you'll never have it back (unless you know of a time machine, if so what are the UK lotto number for this Sat please  ).
You cannot control tomorrow.
The only thing you can affect is today, do not over react and cut the cals too much today.
Just move on, it will happen again. Just enjoy the moment and don't make it a daily thing :drinker:0 -
you were 800 over....my guess is that's not 800 over your TDEE but whatever MFP set, so you were really only over by about 300....which is less than 10% of 1lb of true weight gain.0

Make up for it the next few days, our bodies don't work on a 24 hour clock babe x0

The thing a bout losing weight - it's a long-term thing. Even if you don't have a huge amount to lose, you will still want to maintain it when you reach your goal, and the only way you can really do that, is to make lifestyle changes that are sustainable long-term. When you get to goal, you'll have maybe a few hundred more calories to work with, but you'll still need to be careful not to let it creep back on. The best way to make sure you keep up with it is to create a lifestyle now that you can continue indefinitely. The way you are describing this programme you are on - it doesn't sound very sustainable to me. I don't know much about Insanity, but perhaps building in rest days is a good idea. Overdoing things to the point where you burn out is not going to help you in the long run, and it sounds like you already feel a little resentful that your evenings are being lost. I'm not saying stop doing it - but try to find a balance that you are happy with. With exercise - if you get some enjoyment out of it, it's so much easier to keep it going.
As for the calories - I wouldn't even try to "make up" for it. 800 calories is really not a big deal in the grand scheme of things. I really doubt you were even over your TDEE (total daily energy expenditure / maintenance), so you shouldn't have gained any fat from it. Even if you did, 800 cals is not even half a pound. By the way, if your weight does go up a little on the scales, it's most likely water retention from extra sodium/carbs, as well as from your exercise. Feeling guilty when you go over, or that you've "ruined" the day or "ruined" your diet, these are ways of setting yourself up for failure. Don't beat yourself up and don't be too restrictive now to try to compensate. You just had a day off, and you can get right back on it today.0 -
Call it a spike day to keep your metabolism on its toes!0

Dont be so hard on yourself. I'm new to this site and am starting out with 58 lbs to lose which I am finding hard to comprehend. Look at how much you have lost. Its amazing.0

Suppose you are only 800 over your 1200calories.....but you burned about 2200-3k......
I wouldnt worry too much.0 -

Don't beat yourself up over it! It does the body & mind good to have the occasional treat.
Think of it this way, say in one month you have 4 bad days... that means you had 27 good days! That's what to focus on!0 -

Haha! Yes I was thinking that!!0 -
one days not a fail until every day is a fail

800 only?? I ate half a jar of peanutbutter yesterday. That's almost 1200kcals (without counting my breakfast, lunch and dinner). You'll live hun!! .
Just start over today! Good luck!0 -
We all experience setbacks and bad days. It's part of the journey. The key is not getting discouraged and giving up.0

It's all part of life. Look at it this way, allow yourself one day a week to "cheat". I'm not saying to go over board on that day every time, but take that day to be able to enjoy yourself and not worry about what you had to eat, drink, or even do for that day. As long as you maintain a healthy lifestyle for the remaining 6 days of the week, that 1 "cheat" day will never seem to daughting.
I hope this helps0 -
Defo not a fail you need to enjoy your self at least once a week a cheat meal/day is needed in a lifestyle change:)0

I love my beer n pizza (in proper protions)....haven't caved yet but there'll be a day! Just gotta give your body the variety it needs and stick with the diet the rest of the time/best that you can...my opinion is if you don't have some "fun" food once in a while, in the proper portions...you'll revert back in a heavy way at the end by gorging to make up for the food lost. Heed caution with the fried chicken & big macs...grab a 6" sub instead...and no I don't work for Subway!0

gotta have the odd off day, else your body goes into starvation mode, making the weight loss harder anyway. I always like to think that on one really bad (nice) meal your body can only absorb a certain amount of the fats/carbs in the time its passing through your body anyway so out of the 800cal you put in maybe only 650-700 will be absorbed/digested anyway? I know this is true with Protein per meal anyway.0

What does TDEE mean?
So, TDEE is the number of calories you need to eat to maintain your weight without losing or gaining. MFP gives you a deficit from that depending on how much you told it you want to lose. Say you said you want to lose 1 lb a week, MFP gives you a deficit of 500 calories a day. (So, your TDEE - 500 calories) If you eat 500 cals over your goal, you wipe out the deficit and shouldn't gain or lose for that day. But, if you think about it, if you overate by 800 cals, it would only wipe out the deficit for that day and part of the next. You would still be at an overall deficit for the week, and should still lose fat.
If you told MFP you wanted to lose 2 lbs a week, your daily deficit would be up to 1000 cals (but no lower than 1200 because MFP won't go lower than that). So, say your TDEE was 2000 cals a day, MFP gave you a deficit of 800 cals (so it didn't go lower than 1200), if you then overate by 800 calories for one day, that one day would be at maintenance and you shouldn't lose or gain fat on that day. The rest of the week, you could still be at a deficit.
Remember, none of that includes your additional, planned exercise, and MFP is designed so that you log that exercise and eat back those calories.
Hope that makes some sense!0 -

Thats not a massive fail. A massive fail is if you have a nice night out like that then just keep eating rubbish and never going back to your new routine. :-)0 -
Going over one day isn't going to make or break anything.0

Never thought of it like that!! You are right.0 -

Exactly what I was going to say! It's not the end of the world and if you were within your limits the previous day it still works out to a 200 cal deficit over 48 hrs. (or a 2700 cal deficit over a week rather than than 3500, you're still good!)0 -
It was absolutely not a failure. I make sure that once a week I have a "slack day",. This is where I eat and drink what I want. You have done well to do what you have done and will be surprised to see how on track you really are.0
-
As long as those days don't become routine, then it's no where near a failure.. Just a one day break.0

I've been using mfp since the spring and the genius of using this program - for me, anyway - is that it eliminates the guilt. It's okay to enjoy 'bad' food on occasion. What matters is becoming conscious of what kinds of food you eat and how much of them you eat, how active you are, and over time your behaviour is modified without having to believe in diet magic or voodoo. Weight gain isn't some thing that 'happens' to you. *You* are in control of your body. After losing weight through tracking food and activity, I actually enjoy eating cake once in awhile because I know that it isn't like committing some heinous sin. It's just cake, and no, I'm not going to re-gain 25 lbs because I had a big calorie day. They're just calories. It's the long term average of your intake that matters - per week, say - not what you do on one exceptional day.0
