Big girls and bikinis

At what height and weight did you feel comfortable wearing a bikini?
Or Tankini?

For the last several years I've worn shirts and shorts to the beach
And summer in Australia is coming up, the weather is going to be insanely hot and I'm not sure if I could ever wear a bikini without feeling awful D:

I'm about 160 and fit a size 8 currently. I would wear a tankini in public, but won't leave my backyard in my bikini. No one needs to see all that. :noway:

I don't think I'm "big" but still too self conscious for a bikini

I'm not sure how people look on the beaches in Australia but in nyc you see people of all sizes in bikinis at the beaches. Its just a matter of how comfortable you feel. Most people are too busy doing their own thing to even notice anyway I feel like.
  • you could always get a tankini that has a skirt swim bottom thats what i have. it covers a lot more and im sure would make you feel a little better about it.

The thing I really dislike about bikini's and the like, is the appearance of all sorts of extra bulges. I stick to one piece suits to avoid these.

Im 5ft 5, 172lbs and recently wore a bikini on my honeymoon.
Sure I felt a little odd when I saw hotter girls in bikini's but them I also saw heavier girls rocking their bikini's

In the end its how you feel about your body and self.

For me its not about a weight but more about how toned I am and how the bikini makes my body look. I'm 5'8" and in high school I weighed 145, which is actually a very good weight for me, unfortunately I was very soft, you could almost say "skinny fat". So I didn't like how my body looked in a bikini. As I lose weight this time I am trying to tone up as well. So I feel like I will be more comfortable in a bikini once I get to my goal weight even though its 5 lbs heavier than when I was in high school.

Last time I wore one, I was about 170 lbs and 5' 7.5" (same height as I am, now). That was after losing nearly 70 lbs. I was about a size 12-14. I looked pretty good. I have a well-defined waist, and most of my weight is in my lower half... so as soon as my legs aren't sporting obvious cottage cheese from 20 paces away, I'm okay with wearing so little fabric in public. Some form of tan definitely helps (although I suppose giving everyone around me snow blindness could work, too).

Another rule of thumb: when I've shrunk enough that a regular bikini bottom isn't repeatedly threatening to floss my butt.

  • I think it comes down to you're comfort. If you feel comfortable wearing one then go for it. It doesn't matter how people view you. It's how you feel in it.

When I was at my biggest 20-22 uk size, (225lb) I wore a bikini on holiday! My philosophy was u don't like it don't look!
I'm now down to 161lb & am going on holiday this month & am petrified!? I can't work out my logic!
Before I was a big girl in a bikini, so what, but now I'm slimmer, ive still got fat, (lost to much LBM, working on that) I get where your coming from!
I'm still gona wear a bikini, just have to act confident. You will see all shapes & sizes, everybody's got their own body issues, even those you think look fab! Rock that body in a bikini! Those that matter don't mind & those that mind don't matter! X

    Thank you =]
And I hope you have a good time on holiday x
  • I wore a tankini at 300lbs and I'll wear what I please at whatever weight. I am of the school that if you don't like it then don't look. It is not so much about your weight but how you feel in it. Big girls can wear a mini skirt if she has the self confidence to pull it off.

No one looks perfect in a bikini, you will always find something to pick at. I guarantee every girl in that picture looked at another girl that day and felt self conscious. So where what you feel comfortable in and enjoy your progress. I rocked a bikini at a skinny fat 135 after losing 50lbs, then put some muscle back on and am working my way down to 120. I intend to wear a bikini no matter what because I earned it. I could care less if I look perfect.

I wore a bikini on holiday and I was 182lb at 5ft5. While I do want to lose weight I've not got a bad figure and I'm happy to show off my curves!

It's all about the mentality, I always say. Last year I refused to go on holiday with my parents because I was mortified someone might see me in a bathing suit (and I wasn't super heavy, I was around 140lbs), even though I knew perfectly well that I always see way bigger people on the beach having no problem whatsoever. It's the way you think that makes the difference.

It's the same with regular clothes for me. I tend to be so awkward while shopping for clothes because I don't like my body so I live thinking I'll never find something flattering for my body type, yet I admire girls that are about the same size as me and wear super cute outfits with confidence.

It's all in your head. If you're comfortable with yourself, you can do whatever.

I went to Marbella a few weeks ago and wore a bikini for the first time in my life! 5"8.5 and was about 183lbs. There were loads of women who looked amazing, there were also loads of short wrinkly tubby ones who were even topless. If they have the confidence then why not me. Ok I'm not skinny and probably won't ever be, I have stretch marks from being pregnant but I really don't care. It was hot. I have an amazing man who loves my body. I could do with toning up but hell I wanted a tan. I don't care what anyone thinks and if they do have a problem with me being in a bikini that's THEIR problem, not mine. I had a fabulous holiday splashing around in the sea and got an awesome tan!

I went to Rio on holiday and the first day on the beach I wore a bright pink one piece. EVERYONE was wearing a bikini and I mean Brazilian bikinis that are very very revealing. I left like an idiot because there I was completely self conscious when all the women on the beach- fat ,thin, old, young were wearing these bikinis, and sure some of them didn't look amazing, but no one cared! Everyone just got on with it!

It was the most liberating experiences I have had, the next day I bought a Brazilian bikini and played on the beach like everyone else. Amazing.

You post threads about every other night,,,

one night its about how shallow you are because you look so good..

the next night its about how scared you are to wear a tank or bikini.

*sigh* just post a thread and ask for compliments already.. because THIS is getting old every other night..

*edited to say that "shallow" was YOUR word.. not mine.

Went on a vacation last year at about 200 lbs and wore a tankini. REGRET. i looked a hot mess in those pics but the delusion in my head said i was ok at the time.
ANYway. This dec going on another cruise and I'm working to convince myself i can wear a bikini (mostly to surprise my bf ) since i've lost almost 50lbs since then. I will be taking a tankini in case of a mirror meltdown which is quite possible.

I post threads because I like the community on here. This thread in particular was asking OTHER PEOPLE what weight they felt comfortable wearing a bikini.

And no, I did not state that I was "Shallow" Or that I "Looked so good". I shared a NSV because I felt nice about myself and people noticed it. I was WORRIED that I would come across as shallow.

Honestly, if you have nothing better to do than stalk a teenagers message board posts, I pity your life.

Ok. Being a guy I can safely say I've never worn a bikini.

But I stalkerishly went through everyones photos and I don't see where the problem is. You are all very attractive. If there is anything I've learned in life it's that no matter what I do or how I do it, there will be one person doing it better then me as well as thousands upon thousands doing it much worse.

    But like Vicky1804 said:
In the end its how you feel about your body and self.

I am 164 and a size 14 and no, I would not wear a bikini. Maybe a tankini if I got to a size 8-10 ish. My cousin was dating a girl last summer, and we all went to the water park. She wore a yellow bikini and was easily over 200 pounds and I thought she looked good, and was kind of jealous that she had the courage to wear it.

Oh, is there a limit on how many threads per week we can post? Whoops, I didn't realize that.

I agree with most of you now, it IS about confidence.
